Well, one of the jobs of the tank IS to deal chip damage - not enough to kill, but enough to bring the enemies' health bar to a burstable point. High-damage ults also allow guardians to build mage/assassin - like Athena/ Ymir jungle, or ***bakharna mid.

I agree with what Talenhiem said, and I would like to add a bit more. I'm one of those weird players that finds himself calling tank like 80% of the time (if you look at my IGN profile, you will see I either play tank most of the time or almost par with assassin.) Ults like Ymir and Athena are useful for two reasons. Nice foredamage and retreat. Foredamage e.g., let's say you're an Athena or a Ymir with teleport to gods. Your mid is barely fighting off the jungler and enemy mid. You just pop in there, use your ult, let's say it deals 583 damage. Now, your mid does an ult + ability combo to assure himself a double kill that would have been impossible without the foredamage your ult did. Retreat e.g, similar situation, except all 3 gods are incredibly low health. When the enemy mid and jungler see that you're teleporting through Athena's ult (that does a **** ton of damage) or teleport to gods, they will obviously think it's not worth killing your mid just so you can get 2 kills. I mean, when you use TtG and use your ymir or sobek ult, they're obviously gonna run for their lives, literally. So that's why it's beneficial to have high-damage ults.

I know what high-damage ults do. I've been playing Smite for a while, you know.

But when every single tank has a high-damage ultimate, it's about time that HiRez did something different.

With the bar they've set it would have to be a Morgana ult with like a 4 second duration and no damage.

Thing about these really hard hitting ults is that they are somewhat difficult to hit. Unless your in a camp pit and get a good wall your never going to hit anyone with a fully charged Ymir ult, unless their game crashes or someone else CCs them in place. Hence its primary use as a zoning tool. That sudden 'Oh s#it i should leave' that hopefully disrupts teamfights really well.

I agree I'd like to see some more variety from high damage ults, but at the same time, I don't have much of a problem with them. Most of them have a secondary effect, or the high damage is a secondary effect to something else that adds some sort of cc.
