I've noticed a trend in Arena League lately of Anubis's running full penetration builds; focused void stone, Obsidian shard, shoes of magi the whole deal. That's not a problem ffor most tanks as they hit him once with their CC abilities and their teamates serve up dead jackal but since i main Ares I'm having a really hard time countering it.

Typical scenario I blink ult grabbing a whole bunch of pissed off people everything going a-okay. And then i notice this dog not at all bothered by the fact I just sentenced him to beadless hell... weird. Dog parks in front of me ults up, becomes cc immune and melts my face. Worse part is I can't even adapt to it without sacirficing the point of why I play Ares.

Do I go for a full health build and give up the CD I need to become an initiator? Will that even help me? It's Anubis we're talking about he melts faces that his job. I'm goig to be moving up the ladder at the end of the season, currently 74th on the bronze leaderboard :D and i don't want to give up my spot because some chumpy anubis decides to have a staring match with Ares.

Any solutions?

Nah, build CD and get a couple things.
First, focus health. Full penetration will put him over the cap, resulting in him not actually having much damage and wasting stats. But if he's full pen, then health is the only counter.

Second, get Magi's Blessing. He can't stun = he can't kill well.

Third, make sure your team is focusing him. With 4 items based on penetration, he's lacking straight up damage, and has very little defense. He should melt easily.

A suggested build:
Shoes of Focus, Breastplate of Valor (CDR capped), Magi's Blessing, Hide of the Leviathan, Bulwark of Hope, and either Sovereignty or Void Stone, based on their team makeup (if you need more protection, both are aura so both work).

kk thx ^^ not sure if magi's helps that much though. It's when I ult that's the problem; I can't respond and I'm moving at snail pace. No doggie is putting me under wraps :P

I've actually had a pretty decent question. So I have seen the formula for how damage is calculated.

My question is. Lets say I have 50 flat pen. 15 protection debuff and 21 percent penetration. Would I still be capped at the 50? Or is the only cap on flat pen? In other words I know I can't have 70 flat pen, but can I have 50 with 21 percent pen as well?

@Asians, if anubis is going to sit and channel his full blown ult on your while you're ulting, I'd be roughly 100% OK with that. Your team should be able to mop up very well. The build I listed has 3 (4 with voidstone) sources of magic protection, as well as 4 (3 with voidstone) sources of health, so you should be able to last through his ult decently. Or at least soak enough damage to let your team just eat his face. Magi's is still always a good idea though. INSTANT CCR cap (40%, which shoes of focus doesn't give), plus the CC immunity, plus health, mana, and BOTH protections. It's an AMAZING item.

Chiulin, the % penetration doesn't count towards cap. Base numbers do. (Non-% part of Exectutioner and Spear of the Magus, as well as Voidblade and Voidstone). Obsidian Shard and Titan's Bane will never count towards cap. I might be wrong but I'm almost 100% certain I'm right because they are calculated completely differently - it's based on enemy protections, NOT your penetration.

So you could have 50 pen -15 prot 54 percent extra pen? That's a bit op

Yes, but I think % is determined LAST so it'll always penetrate the least amount possible.

Imagine someone has 100 protections, you have 10 penetration and 15% penetration.
You won't penetrate 15, then 10, for 25 total. You'll penetrate 10, then 15% of 90 which is 13.5, for 23.5 total.
Minimal, but the difference is huge at high protections.

Actually, I am pretty sure it is the inverse; percent penetration takes priority over flat pen.

Just remember that % is taken form the targets max protections (even before debuffs 99% sure)

so a target with 100 prot and your 50% pen and 50 flat will have you dealing true damage :p

and - protections does not work btw :)
