Okay, we all know that SMITE has no storyline at all. Yeah, there are a few tidbits about a war between the gods, but no one even pretends that SMITE has a plot or anything.

This is an attempt to fix that. Basically, the goal of this thread is to explain SMITE. To give reasons why the gods are fighting, why they repeatedly get weaker and stronger, and how it is possible for Loki and Thor to work together. Stuff like that.

Here is my contribution.

Why they are fighting: Because they are forced to. The same mysterious force that restricts their power in increments of 20 also forces them to fight each other. This also explains why Fenrir and Tyr could work together without killing each other - they are unwilling participants.

Why they get weaker or stronger: They all have some magical effect that prevents them from using all of their power. That is also how they are forced to stay, this...curse also represses their immortality.

This can also explain why Hun Batz is here, without his bro. They killed him to make a point.

Who is "they?"

This is a war between Zeus and Odin. It is Mt. Olympus that is being invaded, and the throne above the fountain in the invaders' base looks to me like the same throne that appears in Odin's win and loss screens. While I won't go into detail on why this all started it seems to me like there are two sides fighting with Odin and Zeus at the head of their respective factions.

I feel like the thread should watch this video by smite itself.

Kripox:Hmm. That sounds intriguing, but where does everything else fit in? Like the sometimes contradictory teams, the repeated de-level and re-levels, and such?

Raventhor: Uh, that video still doesn't explain...anything. It talks about how gods lost worshipers, but why are they fighting each other? I suppose some are trying to regain their glory by going on new conquests, but that still doesn't explain how teams of gods exist. Not to mention that it doesn't mesh well with some of the lore, like how Odin is trying to avoid his predetermined death.

Expansion: The apocalypse is happening right here, right now. Gods are losing faith, mostly because the end of the world is nothing like they pictured. An incredibly powerful being (identity unknown) forces gods to fight for which apocalypse. Will the end times come from Ragnarok? Will Shiva destroy the universe, or will Apep devour the sun?

Odin is trying to sabotage his own faction, for if it wins, he will die. He sees this conflict as an opportunity to avert his death.

Zeus, too, fears that the cycle of time will end with his destruction (greek mythology is full of cycles, such as Kronos killing his dad, before being killed by his son). Since the end of time is approaching, Chronos also arrives. And with the millions of mortal deaths, and the deaths of at least a few gods in sight, Thanatos comes out from whatever pit he was spawned. Yadda yadda.

If you're going to consider game mechanics like leveling and deleveling you're not going to get anywhere. You're going to have to try to differentiate what is important to the background and what is merely mechanics. Levels really don't seem relevant at all.

Meh, alright. This is really more like a sound board, a place where you can bounce off ideas. Don't take my words as a restriction, and feel free to make your own canon. Please note that I didn't say your thingy was any less valid than mine.

So, Zeus and Odin are having a war. How's this for a motive: Zeus and Odin are both suffering from a lack of worshippers, but Zeus wants to directly subjugate them, while Odin is trying to lead them to glory for his pantheon. After all, Zeus is kind of a jerk.

Subzero, the video pretty well explains it. Zeus has determined that the only way to gain their worshippers back is to eradicate most of them, make them fear the gods and worship them. Odin, as you can see, is leading his 'troops' against this, he is on the human's side. Now every god has a stake in this: Ao Kuang wants to destroy, and Xbalanque wants his worshippers by slaughter. Various other gods want to save the humans, make them gain worshippers by being benevolent. So a fight has arisen for which gods win, and therefore, what the fate of humanity is.
