Hello everyone, my name is MimiiQ, and welcome to my guide on building Kumbhakarna for various gamemodes. While this guide is primarily focused on non-Conquest, these building tips will help inside of Conquest as well, as well as building with other Supports. Kumbhakarna is an extremely tanky Guardian with very high Crowd Control. This gives him excellent fight potential not only in lane, but in late game engagements. One of the main downsides of this character is that if you're alone and no allies around you, your abilities aren't nearly as useful. Without follow-up, you're just kind of smacking them without purpose.

Abilities & Leveling Order
Sleepy (Passive)
Kumbhakarna does not die when he reaches 0 Health, instead he falls asleep. He will awaken after 8s at 25% Health and Mana, unless hit with 6 Basic Attacks (+1 every 5 levels) while sleeping. This passive has a 240s Cooldown.
Video Example of Passive Ability
.
Because of his passive, don't be afraid to play aggressively with ***bha, as long you have teammates around or your passive becomes useless. Remember, you can use Mighty Yawn while in your passive to delay your death and buy time for backup to arrive.
Throw Back
Kumbhakarna sleepily runs forward. If he hits an enemy he stops and deals damage. If the enemy is a minion, he throws them, dealing increased damage to each enemy they hit. .
This is your main wave clear and highest damage ability outside of your ultimate. You want to max this ability second, unless you're playing a role where your damage is important for the team. For best wave clear, dash the front minion of the enemy wave so you hit every minion behind it.
Groggy Strike
Kumbhakarna smashes down, damaging all enemies in front of him and Rooting them. .
This is your best fight potential ability to get in Conquest, but outside of Conquest where you start at a level higher than 1, it doesn't matter. Paired with a carry that has early game follow-up, such as Ullr, you can have a pretty nasty kill lane. Just make sure to only put a single point in this ability early and max it last, as the root duration doesn't increase.
Mighty Yawn
Kumbhakarna lets out a mighty Yawn that Mesmerizes all enemies in range. If awakened early, enemies have their Attack Speed and Movement Speed Slowed. Kumbhakarna may use this ability while asleep. .
This is arguably your most important ability for ***bha, and is one of the most annoying abilities to face in Smite. I would suggest putting points in this ability early in the game so you get max setup value and help yourself in your passive.
Epic Uppercut
Kumbhakarna moves forward, stops at the first enemy god he encounters, and delivers a massive melee attack that uppercuts the enemy directly into the air. When the enemy lands, it deals area damage and causes Knockup to enemies nearby. .
Blink Rune is very strong to have with this ability and Mighty Yawn to engage. Banished targets are unable to be targeted and you should learn the time it takes for the enemy to land so you can follow-up without repercussions.
In-Depth Itemization
SHOES OPTIONS
Shoes of Focus are the best boots option for Support in my opinion. I personally prefer having the cooldown reduction early, as well has the extra 250 Mana for Kumbhakarna's high mana costs. The extra power you get can also be critical in the early-mid game, as Kumbhakarna has higher damage than most people think, especially with Epic Uppercut]].
Reinforced Shoes are especially important to buy if the enemy has a lot of tick damage. Some core characters that I would pick these boots up against are Da Ji, Merlin, and Anubis. It's never really wrong to get these, as the Crowd Control Reduction is a very good stat to have in Arena, since CC is usually at a high.
Traveler's Shoes are probably the third best boots to have as Support in Arena, as movement speed isn't as important on a smaller map. The bonus speed can come in clutch in certain situations for escaping death, but I would pick the other two over these.
Shoes of the Magi isn't what you want on a Support. In the past when these had penetration instead of lifesteal, I would have said to get these on high-damage Guardians such as Bacchus, but if you really want lifesteal, pick up Pythagorem's Piece.
BLESSINGS
Guardian's Blessing is the best starter item to have as a support in any non-Conquest game-mode. As Support, you aren't clearing the wave, so you might as well benefit from it and gain some extra god to buy some more items.
Warrior's Blessing will be your next best option for a blessing. Only pick this up if the enemy has a lot of tick damage, and/or you're going to take a lot of damage from minions. The 3 damage reduction to all damage taken can really make a difference against tick damage, but even then I would recommend getting Reinforced Shoes.
Specialist's Blessingshould only be picked up in Assault, but even then it's a reach. The 10% cooldown reduction at the beginning of the game can be crucial in teamfights, and the HP5 and MP5 is enough to keep you sustained through the early game. I would still recommend getting Guardian's Blessing so you don't fall behind.
ENEMY DEBUFF ITEMS
Stone of Bindingis a very strong item for any guardian with high amounts of Crowd Control, and Kumbhakarna is no exception. Reducing the protections of your CC'd targets in the early game can help ensure a kill against anyone, and you have plenty of abilities to apply this item passive. Groggy Strike can apply it with the root, Mighty Yawn can apply it to anyone you mesmerize, and Epic Uppercut applies the passive to whoever you hit with the ult, and the knockup from the landing damage.
Jade Emperor's Crown can be good as an aggressive option against a Physical-heavy team. Consider purchase this item if there are a lot of Physical enemies diving your backline, or you are diving a Physical-heavy enemy backline.
[Void Stone can be a great pickup if you have two other mages on your team who are following up your CC with high burst damage. The debuff is a 10% debuff, which means this item does more work against tankier targets such as Warriors and Guardians.
AURA ITEMS
Gauntlet of Thebesshould be bought almost every game with barely any exceptions ever. This item is one of the best items in the game, and I think that it's underrated at low level gameplay. There's a reason it's built in almost every higher level game you see. 300 base health, 15 HP5, and 60 of each protection for yourself, including the 10 protection aura around you can help not only your teammates, but makes you extremely hard to take down without some heavy protection shred from something like Fracture, or Qin's Sais with Odysseus' Bow.
Sovereignty is another Support item that should be consistently purchased. It should be purchased against a Physical-heavy enemy team, which is normal be default because there's usually at least a Hunter, Warrior, and Assassin. Consider purchasing this before Heartward Amulet as Physicals usually have higher early game damage with high base damage.
Heartward Amulet is a fantastic aura Support item against Magical-heavy teams. If the enemy team has something odd such as three mages, or a double Guardian and a mage, then buy this to help yourself and your team. Not only is the Magical Protection and the aura useful, the MP5 aura helps keep you and your teammates in lane for longer.
SITUATIONAL ITEMS
Emperor's Armor can is a good item if you find you and your team sieging more than usual. This item provides some good Physical Protection, as well has slowing the attack speed of enemy structures, and buffing your own structures when you're in range.
Midgardian Mail is best when purchased against melee auto attackers such as Bakasura and Kali. It is also the best option you have to counter tank shredder Hunter builds with Qin's Sais and Odysseus' Bow because if their high attack speed. The added health stat is a very nice bonus to have.
Shogun's Kusari is a solid aura item to have if your team has two or more auto attackers. With the recent buff making the aura 25% attack speed instead of 20%, the item got even better. This item also gives Cooldown Reduction, and MP5 to you don't run out of mana in two minutes.
Tyrannical Plate Helm is a great item if you find your team pushing waves in as a team a lot. Buffing your minions can be very handy for taking down enemy towers and phoenixes, and the item has a number of solid stats such as CCR and Health. The 70 power and the power buff you get from friendly minions dying can also have more of an impact than most people think.
Spectral Armoris the best item to get against Critical Strike builds, as well as abilities with built-in crit chance such as Wind Fire Wheels and Made You Look. The crits will only do half of the normal damage to you, and the item gives as much Physical Protection as Breastplate of Valor, with the added item passive.
Ethereal Staff can be a nice pickup for a few reasons. One is stealing max health from heavy tank comps. Stealing a percentage of health from a tank can be very important for bursting them down, and helping you to take more shots.
[[Witchblade] is strong against auto-attack heavy comps because it reduces enemy's attack speed in an aura around you. It also comes with added cooldown reduction, health, and movement speed.
COOLDOWN REDUCTION
Breastplate of Valor is a top three item in the game for generalized cooldown reduction. It gives solid Physical Protections, as well as Mana and MP5. Building this item mid-game paired with Shoes of Focus gives you a solid cooldown base.
Genji's Guardis especially useful if you're diving a Magical-heavy team. Be sure to try and use your abilities as quick as possible so you can get the maximum value out of the item passive. This is a solid item for getting multiple ability rotations off in a single teamfight.
Mantle of Discord can be a solid final item or late-game item to build. It's generally built to finish off a build and is best utilized if you're being heavily focused at the beginning of teamfights.
Spirit Robe, similar to Mantle, is a very good late-game item pickup if you're being focused. While this gives less base protections than Mantle, the 15% damage mitigation makes you tankier than the lost protections after getting crowd controlled. Purchase this if the enemy is initiating with an ability such as No Escape.
Pridwenshould only be built mid and late game if you are lacking cooldown in your build. If you built aura items such as Gauntlet, Sovereignty, and Heartward, and can't build Breastplate of Valor comfortably, then this is your best option.
Relic Daggeris an essential item for Kumbhakarna. As a support who relies on Blink Rune to engage in teamfights, Relic Dagger gives you the ability to do this more often, as well as CDR for your ultimate.
Relic Choices
RELICS
Blink Runeshould be your primary relic if you can afford to pick it up. You will basically rely on this to surprise engage on the enemy. Without it, your plans will be pretty telegraphed, and easily countered by the enemy. Upgrading this gives you 10% damage mitigation after blinking, which helps you to take less damage when engaging.
Magic Shell is a super strong relic to have no matter what point in the game you are in, as the Health shield scales higher based on your god level. 100 base + 12 per god level means that you have a 340 health shield at level 20. Upgrading this means you get two block stacks on affected allies. Block stacks completely absorb auto attacks and these can help save any carry from an auto-attack jungler or a hunter.
Heavenly Wings can be a strong relic offensively or defensively. Before upgrading it, it's more of a defensive tool, but as soon as you upgrade it and gain the Haste auto attack effect, you won't have trouble running down teams. Pick this up if the enemy team has a lot of slows, or a Horrific Emblem. You should pick this up if nobody else on your team has one, as every team should have at least one sprint.
Phantom Veilis only a necessary pickup against Odin, Yemoja, and sometimes Cabrakan. Don't be afraid to upgrade this if you have to pick it up as the 15 % damage mitiation for teammates is a full Spirit Robe passive.
Gameplay Tips
Casting Types
I would highly recommend changing your ability casting types for Groggy Strike and Mighty Yawn. On PC, press 'K' and change Groggy Strike to Quick Casting and change Mighty Yawn to either Quick Casting or Instant Casting, depending on if you need the hitbox to be shown. I do this because using Blink + Mes combo is more accurate with instant casting.
Correct Targeting
Don't be afraid to use your ultimate on someone for the sole purpose of taking them out of the teamfight for 2.2 seconds, as this can be more impactful than you think. You don't always have to ult a squishy target, taking the enemy Support out of a late game teamfight for a brief duration means that they can't peel for their carries.
Yawn + Ultimate
You can use your Mighty Yawn under the landing zone of your ultimate to ensure the extra damage and knockups. While you don't always get the chance for this, it is a pretty surefire way to guarantee a bit of extra damage.
