Take Aegis Amulet or
Purification Beads as a first relic.
Why do I take Calamitous Rod of Tahuti instead of
Obsidian Shard or any other % penetration item well most of the time
Obsidian Shard passive is about to proc on your
Whirlpool and not your
Tidal Surge or
Release The Kraken!. So in my opinion if you use your 3 and it catches someone
Calamitous Rod of Tahuti will deal a lot more burst dmg. And also lets say you catch 2 or 3 people into your
Release The Kraken! combo it is most likely instakill for them. Big + is that
Calamitous Rod of Tahuti buffs your auto attacks.
Take what u like
Take these whenever you might need them.
Book of the Dead will always be a possibility as long as
Book of Thoth is meta. 1500 mana from items + base mana is a lot so the shield might save your *** in game a few times. But you can always try to build
Bancroft's Claw as a third or fourth item as it does similar thing.
Max CDR build. With Spear of Desolation you are about to have
Release The Kraken! ready every teamfight and sometimes so often that you can spamm it.

I would also keep the flexibility of the build in place.
While the high power is great, you don't need the crazy mana pool from BoT, for example. Stacking items aren't necessarily bad (since you can usually stack fairly quickly), but you might be fighting others on your team for those kills. If there are other items you can get that give you a more immediate advantage (e.g. instead of Sands -> Pendulum for 20%, just grab Chronos first item), that's often the more functional choice.
And I know, I had to do a lot of writeup adjustments for the Conquest guide, including these details.
