Introduction

- Insert mandatory this is my first guide please don't bite me for doing anything wrong disclaimer here -
For reals though, this isn't going to be the Picasso of the Smitefire guide world.
Now that I've finished inspiring confidence in my competence as a guide maker...

Hey everyone. I'm Zane and this is my comprehensive guide to Chang'e in Arena. Before we get started, I'd like to explain my background. I am a mastery X Chang'e player with just over 1400 worshipers to my name. I have an Arena win-rate of 72% across 73 games and an overall win-rate of 69% across 188 games with Chang'e. I'm now going to [try] to post pictures as evidence - not because I'm egotistical - just so you understand the true power of the dance. I only just returned to Smite, so there isn't many recent games, just to warn you.

Why Pick Chang'e? General Pros / Cons

This section will go over the general pros and cons of picking Chang'e in Arena. Despite believing Chang'e is one of the best Arena Gods, I've tried to keep this list balanced and include as many weaknesses as strengths.

Pros of chang'e

  • Synergises well in team settings like Arena
  • Very difficult to kill with burst damage
  • Provides decent sustained damage
  • Strong hard-CC ultimate
  • Many different builds, flexible depending on enemy and team composition
  • Potent by the late-game
  • Some builds are quite cheap and can be finished before an Arena game finishes normally
  • High Skill ceiling > strong when mastered

Cons of chang'e

  • Poor burst damage
  • Generally weak and mana-hungry in the early-game
  • Large weakness to sustained damage gods like Chronos
  • Hard to hit multiple Gods with ultimate
  • Very difficult to secure kills on your own
  • Some builds are very expensive and won't be finished by the end of an Arena match normally
  • High Skill ceiling > Hard to master

What build do I pick? Pros / Cons of each build

This is a very brief description of the pros / cons of each build. It isn't exhaustive, but will hopefully give you some idea as to which ones will suit your play style, and when it's appropriate to build them.

Explaining Item Choices

Your experience with Chang'e will vary dramatically based on which items you pick for her. In this section I will be explaining which items I recommend for Chang'e and why. This section will be split into: Core, Aggressive, Defensive and Situational.

Core

This item should always be your first pick, regardless of build. Chang'e benefits greatly from cooldown reduction and movement speed. The mana and magical power are nothing to laugh at either. Overall Shoes of Focus are a fantastic item on Chang'e and very cheap to boot! Yup. Boot puns.

This item will always be picked up second on a defensive build. It provides a solid 75 physical protection, 550 mana and a 25% reduction to cooldown times. This is the defensive variant of Chronos Pendant, basically. It's cheap and provides you with lots of mana in the early game, which is great as Chang'e tends to be quite mana hungry. Overall, this is a top pick for Chang'e. It provides very strong defense stats and is quite cheap for what it gives you.

This item will always be your second pick for on an aggressive build. It provides a 25% cooldown reduction on all skills, a soild 75 magical power and 25 mp5. The magical power is useful but sadly the mp5 isn't very useful in Arena. Overall Chronos' Pendant is a top pick for Chang'e due to the cooldown reduction and power contribution, which is fairly cheap allowing it to be picked up early.

This is a standard late-game item for most mages in the game. Its best to pick this item up either fourth or fifth, to maximise the 25% magical power contribution. It's an expensive item, but it usually provides 200 magical power in the late game, as well as stacking with any future items you get. It's overall a core item, which really helps to keep Chang'e relevant in the late game.

Aggressive

This item will usually be your third pick in an aggressive build. Most importantly, it provides a flat 33% penetration based on the enemies defenses. Chang'e is one of the absolute best Gods to get Obsidian Shard on, as she doesn't build penetration boots [which reduces the effectiveness of the 33% penetration of armour.] The 70 magical power is also great for the price. Overall it's a great little item that can be picked up cheaply.

This item will usually be your third or fourth pick in a cheap aggressive build. Its passive gives you 1 additional magical power per 1% of missing health. It also provides 100 magical power an 12% magical life steal. It's quite a strange item for Chang'e, but it's pretty cheap and can pack quite the surprising punch on her. Overall, it isn't an item I pick up frequently, but it definitely has its merits for a quick and aggressive build.

]This item will usually be your last pick in an aggressive build. Its passive take an additional 15% of an enemy Gods life on hit, with a 60 second cooldown. It also provides 100 magical power and 300 mana. It's a very expensive item, so it's rare that you'll be able to complete it in an Arena game. It can provide Chang'e with some surprising burst. Overall, it's a very late-game aggressive item that you'll only be able to build in certain situations. It's certainly one of the best aggressive items to build on Chang'e, but I personally very rarely use it even when playing aggressively.

Defensive

This item will always be picked up third on a defensive or hybrid build where you need magical defense. It's passive decreases the magical protections of enemy Gods in a 55 unit radius by 15. This item is great for both hybrid and defensive builds, as it provides you and your team with some penetration. It also gives you 50 magical protections and 40 magical power, allowing you to gain some defense and offense at the same time. Overall this item is good on Chang'e as it provides key stats she needs [pen, magical defense, magical power.] It's also quite cheap, so it's a must-pick on most defensive and hybrid Chang'e builds.

Situational

This will usually be your third or fourth item on aggressive, defensive and utility builds. The 15% healing buff lends itself to Chang'e for her moonflower dance. Usually you will have maxed or near maxed moonflower dance by the time you pick up this item, maximising your efficiency. The 10% movement speed is incredibly useful on Chang'e as it allows you to quickly flow in and out of battle. Finally, the 75 magical power is decent, and will help your Chang'e to pack abit of a punch. Overall, this item is great for most builds and play styles due to the movement speed and power. It's quite expensive, but worth it in almost every instance.

This item will be your fourth, fifth or sixth pick on aggressive, defensive and utility builds depending on the build and situation. It provides a 25% slow for 2 seconds on any enemy Gods hit with your abilities. As Chang'e has low cooldowns [regardless of build] and great poke, it naturally synergises well with her both offensively [for securing your own kills] and defensively [for securing team kills / saving team mates.] The 70 Magical power, 250 Health and 250 Mana are all useful stats on Chang'e for obvious reasons. Overall, this item is on the pricey side, especially for Arena. It's fantastic on Chang'e, but you won't always be picking it up due to the price.

This item will be picked up second or third in specific instances. Its passive provides a flat 40% healing reduction, which does stack with Moonflower Dance to provide a solid 90% healing reduction. It should be obvious - you pick this item when the enemy team has a dedicated healer to shut them down. It provides 50 magical power, 10% life steal and 150 mana, all of which are largely beneficial to Chang'e. Overall it's a very cheap item and incredibly good at shutting down healers on Chang'e. Chang'e is arguably the best God to get Divine Ruin on due to her moonflower dance, so keep that in mind.

This item will be your third pick on a utility or team oriented build. It provides a flat 10 magical protection reduction with an additional 10% reduction to enemy Gods when they're hit with your damaging abilities, which stacks up to 2 times. This item also provides 15 personal magical penetration and 40 magical power. Overall It's a great item to use against tanky teams as Chang'e can quickly spam her skills to reduce their defenses consistently. It's also quite cheap, but you'll only pick it up in certain instances usually.

This item will usually be your fourth pick in a specific instances where you need health. Its passive converts 2% of your health into magical power. The staff itself provides a solid 600 health, 300 mana and 30 magical power, but realistically you will get anywhere between 70 - 100 magical power due to the passive. You pick this item in a situation where you're dying often to a very aggressive enemy team, or being focused so much that Moonlit Waltz can't consistently save you. Overall It's pretty expensive at 2700 gold and it's a niche pick, but it can be quite useful if you need more tankiness.

This item will usually be your fifth or sixth pick in very specific instances. Its passive means that whenever you are crit, you cannot be crit again for 3 seconds. Whilst actively preventing crits you will also gain an additional 40 magical power. This is on a 20 second cooldown. This item has a very specific scenario to be taken in - when you're against a team with more than two heavily crit reliant Gods that are doing well. Its a very rare pick as it's incredibly expensive at 3250 gold, but in specific situations it can be useful. Overall, this is arguably the rarest item you'll take out of the list, but it has its uses in specific situations.

Explaining Active Choices

There are many actives that Chang'e can use, but I commonly only pick four. That's actually a lie - I don't normally take actives at all in Arena for Chang'e. But I know many users are addicted to buying actives, so this section is just for them.

This is generally good in a supportive build as it boosts your healing and your teams movement speed. Very useful against an enemy team filled with slows or curses. I pick this often for supportive builds

I tend to pick this item up on a utility build facing more than one ADC or an attack-speed reliant Assassin like Kali. The attack speed and movement speed de-buff can be useful at securing team kills and changing the direction of team fights. This is one of the better actives for a utility build, in my opinion, as it serves a unique purpose for Chang'e and can help to replace the need for Gem of Isolation.

This item tends to be best on an aggressive build, where you can best use its 5s cooldown reduction to finish off enemies. You may also consider it against a team with alot of heavy CC on low cooldown Gods, like Athena and Sun Wukong. I rarely pick this, but it certainly has its uses when Moonlit Waltz is on cooldown.

I don't tend to pick up this item, but it can be useful on a utility build if you don't want to build Divine Ruin or Gem of Isolation. This item is best picked up versus a healer-heavy enemy team, but will rarely be picked because of Divine Ruin.

Explaining Skills and Their Uses

Chang'e has one of the most unique skill sets in the game, in my opinion. In this section I'll be covering the basics of each skill and their uses in Arena.

TL;DR: Dance your little heart out and spam the poop out of absolutely everything.

Jade Rabbit

Jade Rabbit is the passive of Chang'e. It allows you to buy items out of base, that will be carried to you by your rabbit. Sadly, this part of her passive isn't that useful in Arena. However, the passive also gives you a 25% movement speed buff whilst using any skill and removes the backpedal penalty slow when active.

Crescent Moon Dance

Crescent Moon Dance is a projectile that travels in an arc, dealing damage. It has a very low cooldown and decent scaling.

Moonlit Waltz

Moonlit Waltz is one of the most unique skills in the game by far. It gives you around 1.2 seconds of damage and CC immunity and provides you with mana for each tick of damage you avoided by activating it. It can also be activated to remove any root effect on you, although it cannot be used to remove active stuns, knock-ups or cripples.

Moonflower Dance

Moonflower Dance Provides low damage to enemies and weak healing for yourself and team-mates, with a built in healing-reduction of 50% on enemy gods hit by it.

Waxing Moon

Waxing Moon is a very potent ultimate in Arena, but also slightly over-rated. It provides moderate-high damage and stuns enemies hit. The first God hit will be stunned for a second, the second hit will be stunned by 2s ect, right upto 5 seconds for the last enemy God if you manage to hit the entire enemy team.

The Trifecta Goddess - The Three Gameplay styles of Chang'e

Three gameplay styles?! Madness! In this section I will be briefly covering the principles of each Chang'e Arena play-style you can adopt using the builds provided.

The Defensive/Support Play Style

This Play Style is best reserved for those who are newer to Chang'e and Smite. It won't get you many kills - but it's a much more forgiving play-style generally. This play-style should also be adopted against a hyper-aggressive enemy team composition. If the enemy team has alot of heavy CC, high sustain damage or high burst damage, consider this play-style. Click Below to see the main principles and suggestions of the play style.

Spoiler: Click to view

The Utility / Support Play Style

So maybe you're not new to Smite - you understand the theory - but you are new to Chang'e. Perhaps you don't feel confident enough to engage 1v1. Perhaps you just want to provide support and utility rather than damage. Maybe you're even playing against a more defensive team. If so, this play style is the one for you! Click Below to see the main principles and suggestions of the play style.

The Aggressive play-style

So, you think you're hot stuff. Your guiding principle in life is "who needs Breastplate of Valor when I have Moonlit Waltz? You're constantly harassing the enemy to such an extent that you might as well be in a committed relationship. If you think you've got what it takes, this is the play style for you! Click Below to see the main principles and suggestions of the play style.

We've Fallen Behind! Situational Alternatives

It happens to the best of us. Sometimes our dancing skills just aren't enough and we fall flat on our faces. It's always a difficult spot to be in, especially with a God like Chang'e that relies so heavily on items. Most of the builds provided here are pretty expensive - you'd struggle to complete them when losing. So, what can be done?

Avoid Actives like the Plague

Actives are fantastic when you're winning - who doesn't want additional utility? But when you're losing, they can exasperate your gold woes by taking gold away from much needed items. You have to shift priorities and focus on completing each item as fast as possible. The only exception to this rule is if you're specifically losing because you lack actives - but that shouldn't be the case with Chang'e.

The Builds aren't Absolute

Heresy! Maybe if you're winning. But lets be real - items like Rod of Asclepius and Gem of Isolation are expensive for what they provide, even if they're good on Chang'e. Avoid these items in particular, they may be largely core but they can be discarded if necessary.

If you need damage and penetration, replace Rod of Asclepius or Gem of Isolation or Soul Reaver with Obsidian Shard. This will save you between 600 and 1000 gold, which brings you that much closer to your next item.

If you need health badly, replace Rod of Asclepius or Gem of Isolation with Ethereal Staff. This won't save you much money, but if you're getting focused heavily and your defense isn't enough, this item can greatly increase both your health and surprisingly your damage. If you stay alive you can farm and pick up kills - which you can't do whilst dead.

If you require health or defense in the late-game, you can even replace Rod of Tahuti [now we're in real heresy territory] with Ethereal Staff or Celestial Legion Helm if your enemy is physical and based heavily on crits.

If you need more late-game burst but less late-game sustained damage, consider swapping out Rod of Tahuti for Soul Reaver, especially if you took a tankier build with less magical power.

The Summary

Unless I've forgotten something, which I probably have, then it's time for a summary.

Overall then, Chang'e is an incredibly adaptable God. The six builds I've provided will hopefully show that she can work well when both ahead and most importantly when behind. Even when built aggressively she can still support the team in minor ways; when built supportively she can utterly decimate enemy tanks and healers whilst providing somewhat decent damage. She really is a jack of all trades mage. At worst, she's a walking ult. At best she's one of the safest and most annoying harassers in Smite, capable of dealing with most, if not all, team compositions.

If you made it this far, thanks for reading! I hope it helped you in some way. :)

Looks good! I just started using Chang'e yesterday and I don't know why I waited. I was always like, Eh she isn't that good, just annoying. Now I have seen the beauty in her awesome dance moves. The skill ceiling is pretty high, but so rewarding.
