Situational Alternatives

Notes gems of isolation - Since Thoth has little to no CC, this helps him combo abilities a little easier

Shaman's Ring - Encourages combos by increasing damage. Works especially well on Hieroglyphic Assault, where each shot is individually fired making the bonus damage 30%

Soul Gem - The CDR is useful, but what you're here for is the lifesteal. Gives you longer sustain in lane and eliminates the need for health potions

Winged Blade - Especially useful if you're being harassed by a god with slows and Evade and Punish simply won't cut it

Magi's Cloak - If you're being targeted by a god with high CC, buy this

Rod of Tahuti - Works well with Final Judgement to really nail its ability to instantly kill anyone with low health. Works well with Shaman's Ring

Mantle of Discord - If you're being targeted by a god with high damage and little to no CC, this is the better choice over Magi's Cloak

Dynasty Plate Helm - This should be bought early and sold late, as its value decreases overtime. If the enemy jungler is too much, this is a short-term solution

Celestial Legion Helm - Essentially a more expensive version of Dynasty Plate Helm that doesn't need to be sold

Stone of Fal - Useful if the enemy jungler is magical, or if the enemy mid is too strong for you. You don't need to sell this late game.

Thoth conjures three Hieroglyphs around him, ignoring the Basic Attack Movement penalty. His next 3 Basic Attacks pass through Enemies and apply Ability Damage instead. Additionally, these Basic Attacks deal an additional 25% damage to jungle minions. If these attacks pass through the Glyph of Pain, their range is increased by 30. Hitting an enemy with this ability increases the damage they take from each subsequent shot by 10% and reduces the cooldown by 0.5s (this can only occur once per shot).

Thoth begins summoning pages from his book, up to a maximum of four. When all four have been summoned, he sends them forward damaging all Enemies in their path.

Introduction

Thoth is a long-ranged mage who specialises in dealing high damage in short periods of time. Besides damage, Thoth also brings utility to the table. With his Glyph of Pain, towers take less time to destroy; especially as a group. Even individually, Thoth can arguably push faster than several other mages like Ra. However, he is no Sol. Evade and Punish is useful for setting up combos for allied gods while dashing into battle. Overall, Thoth's ability as a mid-laner is what kept at the top of tierlists for sometime. However, DM Brandon recently labelled him as 'B' tier.

Pros and Cons

Pros
Cons
  • Low health and protections

  • No hard CC

  • Skills are easy to miss

  • Final Judgement is a massive hit or miss gamble

  • Dash has a long cooldown

Abilities

Passive: Dead Reckoning

Thoth pens the names of his fallen opponents in his book, recording their weaknesses. After killing 30 Enemies, Thoth gains a stack of 3 Magical Penetration, and killing an Enemy God will complete the current stack. He unlocks a new stack every 4 levels, up to a maximum of 5 stacks at level 17.

Ability Video

Notes and Tactics

Help with damage early on. This lets you delay any penetration items by a slot or so. Always try to get the last hit on minions to obtain stacks. Same concept if you're item stacking.

Hieroglyphic Assault

Thoth conjures three Hieroglyphs around him, ignoring the Basic Attack Movement penalty. His next 3 Basic Attacks pass through Enemies and apply Ability Damage instead.

If these attacks pass through the Glyph of Pain, their range is increased by 30.

Ability Video

Notes and Tactics

Thoth's main source of damage, wave clear, and poke. When leaving the fountain, activate this but do not cast it. This will save you mana. This won't expire until you fire, so you can carry it with you for as long as you like. Like all abilities, aim and fire where you think your target will be. Pair this up with Glyph of Pain to clear waves and poke. Especially poke, you'll need the range.

Evade and Punish

Thoth dashes in the direction he is currently traveling. After dashing, for 5s Thoth's next basic attack instead fires a magical projectile at the target which pierces through enemies and roots the first God hit and slows every other enemy hit.

If either the Dash or Attack passes through the Glyph of Pain, their respective range is increased by 30.

Ability Video

Notes and Tactics

Can be used to escape or engage for combos. Do not engage fights that you cannot win. This is especially useful when combined with a gank from your jungler. punish and evade is also useful for the opposite; to get out of a gank.

Glyph of Pain

From his book, Thoth conjures forth a Hieroglyph in front of him. Thoth's ability projectile passing through the glyph receive increased damage, and a range increase of 30. This damage does not trigger Item effects.

Thoth and allies Basic Attack projectiles receive a lesser damage bonus, but no range increase.

Ability Video

Notes and Tactics

Glyph of Pain is useful for amplifying Thoth's abilities. Commonly used in conjunction with Hieroglyphic Assault. This can also be used on Final Judgement to snipe from an even further distance. Glyph of Pain is also useful when escaping, as it increases the range of Evade and Punish's dash. In addition, this helps when pushing structures, especially with a team.

Final Judgement

Thoth conjures a large glyph from his book, and then inscribes three more at its corners. When all four have been summoned, he sends them forward damaging all Enemies in their path.
Thoth may activate this ability again to fire the ability early, doing a reduced amount of damage based on the number of glyphs currently summoned. Alternately he may cancel this ability at a cost of 30 mana.

Ability Video

Notes and Tactics

Useful for sniping enemy gods, acting as a finisher. When fully charged after channeling, can potentially one-shot some gods below 70% health. However, you have to wait for it to charge and aim properly, which is actually quite difficult. This can also be used to engage, hitting multiple enemies. This makes it easier to finish them off. Also, Final Judgement can go through walls making it great for ganks. Keep in mind that all of Thoth's abilities can fire through walls and for every glyph he draws after the first, the damage of his ultimate his increased by 40 + 20%. One more thing: If you're trying to be stealthy, his incessant screeching will typically give you away.

Ability Combos

Notes and Tactics

Used to poke, clear minion waves, and damage non-structures in general. Final Judgement can be used in place of Hieroglyphic Assault to finish off enemy gods at a distance.

Notes and Tactics

Use this when escaping, taking advantage of the range boost on the dash. Fire the AA boost through the glyph on whoever is chasing you.

Notes and Tactics

Use this to engage, focusing on a single enemy.

Notes and Tactics

Against a single god, use this to finish them off. However, this is fairly risky as a stun would interrupt the channeling process and allow the enemy god to take advantage of your proximity to them as Thoth works best from a distance behind the frontlines.

Playing in The Mid Lane

Early-Mid

  • Activate the three charges on hieroglyphic asault as soon as you spawn in the fountain

  • Head to the speed buff and use Hieroglyphic Assault on the camp, but do not take the buff

  • Clear the minion waves

  • If your jungler is heading to the damage camp, follow, help him clear it, and take the buff

  • If the enemy jungler has high kill potential early game, warding is advisable

  • Always work with your team, especially your jungler

  • Use Glyph of Pain to push structures

  • If the solo laner or ADC needs help, go and help them

  • Clear the mid furies as much as possible, without dying of course

Late Game

  • Move to other lanes to help push towers if needed

  • Don't depend on your jungler for the damage buff, as you can clear it yourself at this point

  • Group up late game to push phoenixes or the enemy Titan

  • Ward near allied phoenixes that have been defeated

  • Keep a safe distance from the frontlines, or you'll die easily

End

True, however it only does so by 5

It's more than 5, you're forgetting Obs Shard. If this was any other mage than Thoth then I wouldn't see a problem with divine + deso + pen boots + obs shard, but, it is Thoth.

Like I don't see the issue, swap deso for tahuti and then sell boots for speed pot and deso.

Since his cooldowns are small (Execpt for Evade and Punish), I think you could also list a no Thoth and no Chronos' build.

Start: Mage's Blessing, Magic Focus, potions.
Build: Shoes of Focus, Spear of Desolation, Divine Ruin, Soul Gem, Obsidian Shard, Rod of Tahuti, sell boots for Shaman's Ring or another CDR item if you need it.

Kriega1 (143) | May 14, 2019 12:32pm
Im not sure about that build, needs some tweaks.

Shoes of Focus, Spear of Desolation, Divine Ruin, Soul Reaver, Obsidian Shard, Soul Gem is better. Can sell boots for Rod of Tahuti.

Also the build has 30% CDR until you sell boots/blessing (or get magical power pot), so im not sure what you meant by "small cooldowns".

If it was up to me I wouldn't even list Soul Gem since the last change to his 3 but I have seen others build it, so it's fine I guess.

Vini_sds (13) | May 16, 2019 9:50am
I still advocate against Soul Reaver outside of Thoth builds unless extremely necessary.

Soul Gem helps with Final Judgement burst.

I mean that Thoth's cooldowns are low on their own, not due to the build. So you can skip Chronos' Pendant and go straight into Deso+Focus.

You haven't mentioned Rod of Tahuti in your notes, and if you did mean to, I recommend mentioning somewhere it has good synergy with Shaman's Ring. I don't recommend getting Tahuti or Shaman's in a book based build though for Thoth.
1
Tlaloc1050 (17) | May 14, 2019 6:09am
@Kriega Why does it have good synergy? Genuinely unsure
1
Kriega1 (143) | May 14, 2019 12:31pm
Because Rod of Tahuti increase the extra damage from evolved Shaman's Ring passive. (under 50% health). I've tested it on an ability based Chronos in jungle practice and with Section III active I can use 3+1 on level 20 Neith/Thor/Ra bots and they get one-shot by it. Of course, this wasn't factoring in protection auras.

Also I think Shaman's Ring amplifies the damage from Soul Reaver as well but im not 100% sure on that, nor am I sure that it is as effective.

An evolved Shaman's Ring causes an enemy to be debuffed when you hit them with an ability, causing your other abilities and attacks to do more damage. Add in Rod of Tahuti's passive of additional magical power against low health opponents and you can quickly annihilate them.

Oh I didn't know you'd done this. =P

Looks good overall, and items seem to be covered well.

As an FYI, you can try a different embedding for ability videos...previously I did some of it using Giphy (uploading a video and coding it as an image), but I was never really happy with the quality of the gifs. And I find YouTube videos for 5-10 second videos to be clunky.

Talked last night with Psi, and he pointed me to a different gif-making site (https://gfycat.com/upload) and with a bit of a roundabout process and different code (webm), got a much better quality that I'm very pleased with overall. If you want to see how I've used them and the quality, check out my Medusa or Freya guide. We could do this with Nox too.

Hmm... Is the code complicated/difficult?

You have Celestial Legion Helm listed twice in your notes. I'm pretty sure you meant to mention Stone of Fal first.

I'd like to see an explanation of why you picked your items, Tlaloc. Other than that, take my +1. Take it! Take it all!

*Ahem*

Sorry. :)

"Keep a safe distance from the frontlines, or you'll die easily" - not just frontline, but any assassins (e.g. Susano who I would consider Magi's Cloak against if they're a good player, and depending on team coordination), who could blink in on you and demolish you, even if you dash away (also stun to root made him weaker to assassins).

Also I don't know if this counts as a combo, but you can 3 and ult from behind a wall or something from far range that people wouldn't know what hit them.

"One more thing: If you're trying to be stealthy, his incessant screeching will typically give you away." - I can't remember which skin it is, could be "Geek Beak" or whatever it's called, but I think it has the quietest ult casting sound. Also you can bait out relics with his ult, but since they added the mana cancel cost you want to be a bit conservative with this and not spam it too much.
