JUST BUILD, DON'T THINK

Notes Wait until you at least finish Odysseus' Bow before buying the glyph The Ferocious Executioner. It's usually efficient more to buy the glyph after being full build.

Buy Potion of Power after you upgrade The Ferocious Execution, however it can be cheeky and the damage can catch your opponent off-guard if you buy it after Qin's Sais and look for some aggressive plays.

This build gives you almost everything you could ever need also crit builds stink at the moment. Consistent DPS is your best friend.

You can get Dominance before Odysseus' Bow if you prefer that, I'd advise the latter as a fifth item as it is 400 gold cheaper.

DON'T FORGET: WARDS WIN GAMES!!!!

Author Notes (+Update Log)

Hello, welcome to my first God guide. I hope this guide is helpful on teaching you how to play Hou Yi. He's fairly easy and friendly to get the hang of, but he has a near limitless potential (mostly due to Ricochet).

To summarise, Hou Yi is a solid god that you won't regret learning to play, who thrives in tight 1v1 situations, extended teamfights and can easily put distance between himself most other Gods.

Disclaimer: Everything in this guide is what works for me in most situations - if it doesn't work for you leave a comment and if I like it, I'll add it into the guide.

Now onto to the actual guide. Enjoy!

Abilities

Hou Yi's Passive Ability is Suntouched:

This is Hou Yi's simple yet effective passive ability. If Hou Yi is struck by a Critical Hit - he will become immune to ALL Critical Hits for 3 seconds. Making this a very useful boxing tool against Critical Hit Based Gods like Jing Wei and Olorun, and Critical Hit Based Builds.

Additionally, this cannot be removed by any form of Crowd Control, so it always lasts for the full 3 seconds.

Hou Yi's 1st Ability is Ricochet:

This is ALWAYS the first ability upgraded as it is his only form of good waveclear and damage in the early game. Ricochet is an ability that can bounce of a surface up to 2 times, with each shot gaining 40% more damage per bounce. (Note: This "Bonus Damage" is only against enemy Gods. Also, the third bounce is almost 2 times as strong as the initial shot (1 x 1.4 x 1.4 = 1.96) where 1.4 is the 40% damage increase).

So, the 3rd bounce does 1.96x the damage of the initial shot.

Also, hitting all 3 bounces on one god does 5.14x the base damage of the 1st shot.

This ability is useful for clearing waves and camps. It is also good for poke due to its 10 second cooldown. Ricochet can be deadly in close-quarters due to fast rebounds causing large amounts of damage in short periods of time.

Also, Ricochet can be used to poke distances at greater lengths when rebounded off a wall. This means that more distance can be between you and the enemy whilst still applying damage. (Note: This shot is easier to dodge though)

--> Ricochet can be upgraded at Level 9, as well as Sunbreaker; by holding your Level-up Point gained at Level 8, as it gives more dmg output overall. Not a necessity but it might help.

Ricochet can also be used to kill recalling enemies, due to them thinking they are at a safe distance (Note: The distance of 3 bounces is 210 units, 3 times longer than the first shot at 70 units) so the bounces allow for a kill from greater distances, giving one of the most satisfying feelings in Smite.

Hou Yi's 2nd Ability is Mark of the Golden Crow:

This ability gives Hou Yi's entire kit a bit more flavour, by applying additional effects to one singular enemy with the 10 second Crow's Mark.

Each ability gains a new secondary effect:

- Ricochet gains a 1 second stun (stuns DO NOT stack with bounces).
- Divebomb gains a small knock-up effect.
- Sunbreaker gains a 20% slow lasting 0.5 seconds (each sun causes a slow).

Also, enemies become visible on the minimap whilst having the Mark of the Golden Crow and a ping sound (same as a ward) plays when the enemy is behind a surface (Note: For some reason minions and other gods can act as surfaces, creating the ping).

Additionally, each rank up, per every 10% of Health the enemy God is missing Hou Yi gains a 1% damage increase, starting at 2% for each 10% missing Health, up to a maximum of 6% (At max rank this will provide, for example, 30% Damage increase if an Enemy God is 50% missing of its maximum Health).

This Ability should be used on the God you are focusing either in a solo fight or in a team fight, as it gives potential for additional effects and damage to be applied.

Hou Yi's 3rd Ability is Divebomb:

There isn't much to this Ability, it is Hou Yi's leap. (Note: I'd highly recommend this for an escape only, as it has a lengthy 15 second cooldown)

The main use for Divebomb is to escape tricky or un-winnable situations, the ability can leap over walls and can be circled in a full 360 degrees.

Divebomb can be used to execute or chase an enemy on low hp, this is only advised if you have more than 50% Health or if being trade killed is worth it, as in the late game it can take up to 60 seconds to respawn and that isn't really worth 1 kill.

Finally, if the Mark of the Golden Crow is applied to a target, who then dashes away (Note: Doesn't work for all "Dash" abilities in Smite) it MIGHT interrupt a dash or other slow casting abilities by providing a slight knock-up, but it is very difficult to apply this interruption and requires hours of practice plus good timing.

Hou Yi's 4th Ability is Sunbreaker:

Sunbreaker is Hou Yi's Ultimate Ability, where he shoots 9 arrows into the sky causing 9 suns to fall from the sky to a fixed location within a radius of 30 units. The Ability lasts for 4.5s seconds (Note: Each sun falls every 0.5 seconds).

Each time a sun hits the floor damage is applied, so enemy Gods take damage every 0.5 seconds when in the radius of Sunbreaker. Also, enemies with the Mark of the Golden Crow are slowed by an additional 20% inside of the Ultimate.

Sunbreaker is very useful in team fights as it can change the flow of a team fight, as the enemy should focus on evading Hou Yi's Ult and this allows for a few extra basics or a Ricochet. Sunbreaker can cause massive damage when coupled with the stun from Ricochet (using Mark of the Golden Crow) it means the enemy God is stunned for 1 second, they take a minimum of 2 hits from Sunbreaker.

This ability should be used sparingly as it is only available once every 90 seconds (without Cooldown Reduction), however it can be used to clear waves and defend the tower if you're being pressured by an enemy God.

Items

First things first, these items ARE NOT the 100% best items to buy as all situations require different items or builds - this is just what I've found gives good overall damage, sustain and general effectiveness regardless of the situation.

My Go-To Build for Hou Yi:

Current Build for Hou Yi

Other Viable Builds for Hou Yi:

#1 Alternate Build for Hou Yi

Items You Can Build:

Starter Items:

- Leather Cowl is a great choice for Hou Yi, gives good overall stats and Hunter's Cowl provides a great passive Attack Speed bonus when near allies and Movement Speed whilst travelling alone.
- Death's Toll a reliable and versatile choice, both upgraded forms: Death's Embrace and Death's Temper are viable choices for most build paths.
- Gilded Arrow is a option for a high level of farming potential, the bonus gold for killing marked targets can provide a large gold difference. Also picking up Diamond Arrow is decent for an upgraded starter.
- Eye Of The Jungle if you decide you want to play Hou Yi in the Jungle role then you'd best pick this as your starter. Ricochet annihilates camps with this starter. Also provides additional, yet very small, ward vision for 30s.

First Items:

Devourer's Gauntlet - Devourer's Gauntlet is the current go to stacking item (as of Patch 10.8), its power, lifesteal and fair price give it a bit more prevalence than most other first slot items.
(Note: When fully stacked this item provides 70 Physical Power and 20% Lifesteal).

Transcendence - This item gives a large Mana pool when fully stacked, converting a percentage of your total Mana into Physical Power. Transcendence is a viable pick for Hou Yi as he can constantly poke using Ricochet with the plethora of Mana. It also gives 10% CDR when stacked, which allows you to cast two Ricochet per each Mark of the Golden Crow cast.
(Note: When fully stacked this item, alone, provides approximately 97 Physical Power at level 20).

Offensive Items:

The Executioner - Having nearly returned to its spotlight, The Executioner is one of the premiere penetration items at the moment. It's cheap, effective and flexible nature allow it to be the core, or supporting, penetration item of most current Hunter builds.

Qin's Sais - Forever viable into high HP enemy teams, the more they have, the more damage you do. Simple. The bonus damage is always nice and the base stats of this item are great too. The pinnacle item of a Penetration based build. Qin's Sais is on the expensive side, so it is advisable to build it as a 4th item or later.

Odysseus' Bow - Attack Speed go brrrr. Odysseus' Bow shines in Penetration builds as it doesn't usually fit into Crit Chance Builds. It is great for teamfights by providing constant bouncing damage between targets, can prevent incoming/retreating blinks, secure kills on low HP targets or even steal Fire Giant, if you're that lucky.

Dominance -

Griffonwing Earrings -

Demon BladeDemon -

Dominance -

Fail-not -

Rage - 45% Crit when fully stacked (get a kill, or assist, 5 times), for 2500 gold, it's a decent item, but not the greatest on Hou Yi as it lacks Attack Speed.

Deathbringer -

Note: Magic Shell and its upgrades are a viable replacement for Aegis Amulet if you find yourself against typical low-burst, AA-Haste abusers like Kali, Bakasura and a few others. You'll know when. Blink Rune is a possible first Relic when playing Hou Yi Jungle.

Great flexibility in the build, and thank you for making this specific to Hou Yi instead of just slapping together a "staple ADC" build

No Fail-Not? Doesnt that allow to cap out you pen?

You're thinking of Titan's Bane; Fail-Not increases critical hit chance. While it does have %pen, it won't allow you to overcap it.

you dont even mention silverbranch bow but it has good stats even if you dont have a steroid. for you pen build#2 i would not get devos instead get berserkers right after boots then go asi and swap bloodforge with silverbranch gives you 40%pen and 15flat pen and still good power with cap attack speed

Tbh AA hunter builds aren’t that good against tanks right now. I’m sticking to mage ADCs (Hecate and magus), and ability hunters.

Perfxction (1) | July 16, 2020 6:03am
still worth mentioning silverbranch to improve the build already given.
what is your ability based hunter build? do you use jotuns for cdr or failnot? titansbane or atalantas bow?

Does this build work for the current patch 7.3? If not it would be awesome to see your take on it. Love the build btw.

I tried you're build in conquest and joust. I had some nice results. But i didn't like the runeforge path build.
1
Kriega1 (143) | May 21, 2019 2:04pm
Thats mainly because you only get the most out of it if you auto attack enemies when they're stunned with his 1 + mark or if they're damaged by Hou Yi ult.
1
Z0rr0ark (3) | May 30, 2019 5:33pm
I agree with Kriega1, it is also useful in CC heavy team comps. As Runeforged Hammer's passive is applied from all CC effects (except the ones excluded in the passive).

DV-8 (35) | May 12, 2019 11:02am
Hey, Z0rr0ark.

Seeing as you recently updated your guide for the current patch, I noticed that you still have Transcendence listed under the "Not-So-Meta" section.

When Asi was changed recently, I think it made the Transcendence build path a lot more viable, even comparable to Devourer's Gauntlet builds.

I think this is something that you should re-explore, assuming that you already haven't. If you have, what is your reasoning for not giving it a spot in your main builds?
1
Z0rr0ark (3) | May 30, 2019 5:29pm
Hello DV-8,

I just feel Devourer's Gauntlet is stronger than Transcendence, even though it's classed as "Not-So-Meta" it doesn't prevent your build path going that way.

It also comes down to personal preference, if you like to spam abilities Transcendence is the way to go for you.

I have re-explored it beforehand, and explored it since your comment. Simply put, I like Transcendence I always have, I build it in Duel almost all the time. It just feel like that Devourer's Gauntlet provides Hou Yi with more than just raw power, I also like Lifesteal for boxing in lane, since 9 times out of 10 the enemy ADC is also building Devourer's Gauntlet.

I do agree, that Asi has made Transcendence viable again, it's just my preference after almost 15000 worshippers, that I build Devourer's Gauntlet.

Why I think that 40%=0.4 not 1.4 ?
Doesn't the crusher fall back in late game?
4
Branmuffin17 (400) | May 23, 2018 11:45am
2nd question first. The Crusher's bonus damage isn't a huge amount, but the combination of stats makes it appealing for hybrid function (good power, good flat pen, good attack speed, with a slight damage bonus on ability use, which Hou Yi relies on).

It CAN be replaced late-game. Which item would you consider as replacement, and what advantage would it give you over The Crusher?

As for the other question...I'll put that in a spoiler.

the maths
1
DrinksAdmirer (1) | June 24, 2018 2:46pm
Pretty good explained! Thank you
4
Z0rr0ark (3) | May 24, 2018 8:29pm
I don't know why you (DrinksAdmirer) thought that, perhaps it's a common misconception, that the 40% is a reduction? But no, it is additive - meaning it increases 1.4x the damage per bounce, as in Branmuffin17's Spoiler, the maths is correct and I ran the numbers and everything checked out in game too. ~Poor Bot Odin~

I think it was designed such a way, you are rewarded for hitting more than one bounce, or you are encourage to bounce where possible for extra poke (though sometimes a straight line shot is more worth it)

Second point, The Crusher does fall off in late, I'll need to state it merely a bridging item to the late game. Example:

Devourer's Gauntlet / Warrior Tabi / The Executioner

From here you can chose to take The Crusher as your 4th item, or you can opt for a more direct route to a possible final build of your choice.

It really boils down to your preference, for me, I like that extra attack speed I can gain from The Crusher. Though I do usually end up trading Warrior Tabi for Ninja Tabi and selling The Crusher for (usually) my final crit item: either Poisoned Star or Wind Demon.

Thought Triple Crit isn't entirely the best build, I find the consistent crits coupled with an attack speed of about 2.03 (after a crit) to be rather powerful.

Consequently, I agree with Branmuffin17, I think The Crusher is still viable in the late game, but it all relies on your current situation, your lead, your damage potential; etc etc. Simply, there are too many factors in a game to just say that "Crusher falls off in the late game".

I hope I answered your question, sorry if I deviated at the end there :D

Hey Z0rr0ark,

Builds all look solid...good choices overall, and item orders that make sense.

Only a couple of comments:
  • In your tank shredder build, wondering if you'd get more out of Qin's Sais before Odysseus' Bow...have you tried that, and what is your opinion if so? I do see use out of Bow before Qin's, due to the massive attack speed and being 600 gold cheaper, though. I just barely ever get O-Bow myself, and if I do, it's usually 5th or 6th item.

  • Not the biggest fan of Exe + TB, but yeah, that's a tank shredder build for sure.

  • Hey, that's my Conquest guide's map pic =P

  • Like many do with most gods, you level your ult whenever it's available. Since people often high-tail it out of there when you do use it, I think delaying the 2nd point in your ult at 9 to max Ricochet might be a sound strategy. The ult isn't up nearly as often. and it's an 11% increase in damage compared to an 18% increase in Ricochet. If things other than just damage increased with the ult, I'd consider leveling it first, but since that's not the case, I don't think it hurts prioritizing other abilities.

Hi Bran,

In response to your comment, I know it's been nearly 2 months - but I took a break from Smite. Anyway into the response.

First of all, I want to state I didn't intentionally take your picture - I searched for it on Google and it looked good so I chose it. Sorry for taking it without permission.

Then, my builds will now have to change as Season 5 is here.

Finally, in regards to your final comment - I do, do that but I created this guide as a template. I was unsure if people would feel comfortable, but now you've mentioned it I'll add it in the Ricochet under the Abilities Section.

Thanks for your feedback!

This is a great guide, with solid explanations on everything. Nice job!

I saw the Blink Rune in the Relics that kind of peaked my curiosity. I would like to know more about your thoughts on that.

Also, how do you feel about Odysseus' Bow? I think it can work for him in a Qin's Sais build to get the passive to proc more often, and give a bit of area damage in group fights. I get the feeling that it might not "fit" very well in your builds though, with other more important items occupying that item slot. I figured I would ask though to be sure. I think The Crusher could be another interesting option...

Again, a nice guide. Thanks for sharing.

Dumb question:
Does O-Bow proc other items now, or are you referring to the attack speed?

O Bow, does not proc other items, I think he means Qin's Sais and O Bow giving 55% Attack Speed so that the O Bow's passive is proc'd more often.

Thanks for the kind words, so...

1) I rarely run Blink Rune as it is for when I'm super fed and I can afford to pressure even more, plus it's a fun relic to have - I don't use it in ranked though. Considering removing it as it doesn't really fit with his build.

2) I, personally, have no opinion on Odysseus' Bow however it could be beneficial in a Qin's Sais / Attack Speed build, for sure. I'll alter the build examples, or add a new one entirely. If I built Odysseus' Bow I'd change from Ninja Tabi to Warrior Tabi for extra physical power on the passive of O-Bow.

3) And about The Crusher, I find it difficult to place that in a build for Hou Yi - maybe with the recent buff of 20% Attack Speed, I can place into a Penetration focused build but other than that I think other items like: Asi; Exe; Qin's work better on Hou Yi.

Thank you for the feedback, make sure to keep an eye on this guide as I'll be updating it soon for specific gamemodes and situations.
