Introduction

Hey everyone, I'm Bill Nye the Science Guy, IGN: Vergil401k. I've been playing Smite for 4 years and maining the solo lane for 3. I used to play Hades in mid but after realizing that this character can do so much more not building full damage I chose to transfer to the solo lane. I've mastered countless other gods; Osiris, Tyr, and Thor to name just a few, but Hades is the one constant. After taking him to diamond I noticed that a lot of people are building incorrectly or just playing wrong. I'm here to fix that.

Summary

Hades, for God knows what reason, is listed as very easy. That tells me either they don't know what they are doing with the god, or that they were lit. Hades is an incredibly difficult to god to learn and master. It takes good situational awareness, cooldown management, and team communication to make Hades excel after the laning phase, which is what he's known for, and put him into the late game as more than just an ult bot.

Pros:
Cons:
  • Needs to chain abilities off each other
  • Basics are not that great
  • CC immunity is only on the ult
  • Big, slow target tbh
  • doesn't excel at damage as much as you'd like
  • LONG cooldowns

Skills

Passive - Blight

Blight is the thing that bring Hades's kit together. It adds a slow, a fear as long as Ymirs's Freeze, an explosion, heal, and additional protections. It's one of the reasons people yell "son of a *****" when they see a Hades in the loading screen.

1 - Death From Below

Death From Below is our initiation, our escape, and it's our execution. Hades is not a mobile god, his movement speed is slow, and this - his only ability of movement - is crucial to survival and winning teamfights. Don't just use it to jump in and initiate a team fight, think about their chances of survival, or if your teammates can kill them. If you think you have to use it to escape, use blink, or just walk in. Remember, think what your opponent and your teammates can do, not just what you can do.

2 - Shroud of darkness

Shroud of Darkness with Blight applied is an amazing usage of hard cc. It turns into a fear and silence when used if they are already blighted, and that fear is 3 seconds long. That is as long as Ymir's Freeze. It's useful in nearly in every situation: wave clear, team fights, objectives, and even more. Try to keep this on cooldown as often as possible unless you're conserving mana in the laning phase.

3 - Devour Souls

This is your main source of wave clear, and what makes Hades the single best laning god in the game, no question. 2 points into this ability and a fully blighted wave will not only get one shotted but it will also heal you. It takes a bit of practice, preparation, and luck to get an enemy caught in the wave in this and get hit by all the minions, but if they do; they will not survive.

4 - Pillar of Agony

Outside of the laning phase, this is what keeps Hades in the game as a proper threat. Pillar of Agony can be used to force out abilities, relics, or trap gods whose cooldowns are up because they tried to run from you or your teammates. This is a highly flexible move, so use it when you see fit to try and secure a kill, initiate, or burn a couple things.

Items

The start is pretty self explanatory, warlock's sash is the perfect item for Hades. It gives him health and power, which he can get from clearing the wave; it's like they were made for each other. Moving on however...

VS

While you might not need the penetration in the late game, as you will build Void Stone later on, it might help you in the early stages in the game. CDR boots will help early on with managing cooldown, and may give room to building a non - CDR item, it can make building a bit awkward if you're not good at situational building. It's ultimately up to you and your preferences.

Breastplate of Valor is an excellent all around item. It gives physical protections, a lot of mana, and some much needed CDR on a very heavy cooldown character, all for a very cheap price. There's no downside.

Another fantastic item, this item brings the magical protection you need to not get killed faster than the popular chick in a horror movie, penetration to do some more damage, and an aura to give your allies some more damage to dish out. Can't go wrong.

Ethereal Staff is not the item it used to be in season 2, it doesn't give a crazy 600 health anymore, but 400 is plenty, and it gives more power. The more health Hades has, the better. It doesn't matter whether you're ahead or not, this is a viable option either way.

When you're ahead, and getting kills and assists left and right, there is no better option than Mail of Renewal. It gives an insane amount of healing and mana regen and can keep you in the fight as long as it lasts, or, at least till you stop getting kills. There might be one better item in this items niche, which is...

This item's base stats are complete garbage, but, when you get 3 stacks, it's worth the gold. Now multiply it by 3 and add 1 and you get a crazy amount of protections to both magic and physical attacks. Only get it if you're consistently getting kills, and it's smart to either get this or Mail of Renewal, not both.

Midgardian Mail is a not just an item with great stats and a niche passive. It's great stats and passive that can affect every single god in the game, and hit some more than others. It's cost effectiveness and good stats make it a viable item in both ahead and behind situations.

Mantle of Discord is a defensive item by nature, and is considered a luxury item for the amount of gold you spend to get it, the core of this build will allow you to buy time until you get it online. The stun on this item will give you time to escape or reinitiate, and the base stats are well worth the expensive cost.

Now, as for actives, you might feel pressured into teleport, and you might be if you're behind to keep up with your enemies rotation. If you're ahead, you may choose to forgo teleport entirely and get an combination of any of the actives listed above in the build section. blink for initiation, shell in the case of support not getting it for another active, meditation for mad baiting, and thorns to combo with Pillar of Agony to force people into situations that favor your team. It's all subject to play style, so experiment and see what you're comfortable with.

Conclusion

Hades requires a ton of practice to get right. His abilities are a tricky to use, he requires the correct items, and the correct coordination and team composition to get correct. The only thing I can recommend after everything I've written is follow this guide and in time, you will get it right.
