Relic Choices

Notes Teleport glyph will usually be your first slot choice since it allows you to back and return to lane without missing too much farm, however if you are in a good matchup then Blink Rune might be better later on in teamfights.
Purification Beads helps you avoid being locked down by CC and blown up.
Shield of Thorns reflects damage back upon the caster, good for punishing enemy carries.
Cursed Ankh is a very situational pickup to shut down lots of healing, Vamana's ultimate Colossal Fury and Sun Wukong's ultimate Somersault Cloud.

Introduction

Perfect in Form and Function - An Achilles Guide
Greetings, and welcome to my SmiteFire guide, which I have written about one of my favourite characters in Smite, Achilles, the Hero of the Trojan War. I've played Smite casually for about three years now and I hope I can teach you something. Thank you very much for taking the time to read this guide.
This guide is rather long, so I recommend skipping through to the section you are looking for.

Who is Achilles?
Achilles is a Greek melee warrior in Smite. Due to his passive, Gift of the Gods, Achilles has a very versatile playstyle, taking the "jack-of-all-trades" nature of warriors to a new level, which is reflected in that he can play the Solo, Jungle and even Support roles in Conquest. He is a very fun and reliable character if you learn him and I highly recommend him. With that aside, let's get into the guide with the pros and cons of Achilles.

Pros and Cons

Pros and Cons of Achilles

Pros
    Versatile, "jack-of-all-trades" character.
    High sustain
    High damage without sacrificing tankiness.
    EXECUTE.
Knight of Mordred is one of the best skins in the game (not biased at all).

Cons
Relies on blink in the jungle.
    Easily locked down by CC.
    Bad early game.
Ultimate can be predicated and negated by a well timed Aegis.

Abilities

Achilles' Abilities

Achilles' abilities are relatively simple to use, but it is worth learning how to use them effectively so as to maximise your damage.

Passive - Gift of the Gods
This passive allows Achilles to switch between an Armoured and Unarmoured stance in the fountain by basic-attacking. Armoured stance grants health and protections, and Unarmoured stance grants power and movement speed. Successfully utilising his passive is the key to playing Achilles effectively. In solo I recommend starting unarmoured and putting your armour on after buying Blackthorn Hammer. In Jungle I recommend starting unarmoured and putting your armour on after Ancile or Heartseeker depending on the current match. In support you could start unarmored going into a good matchup or armoured into a bad matchup. I would put the armour on at least after Blackthorn Hammer.

1 - Shield of Achilles
This ability is Achilles's main form of CC and also does hefty damage. This ability consists of two cones - the first, smaller cone in front of you does full damage and stuns enemies CC, and the second, larger cone just does lesser damage. Use this wisely, as it is your only form of CC. Shield of Achilles is generally leveled second, although in the Jungle it should be leveled first.

2 - Radiant Glory
This ability is a stim, and one of your best abilities. It provides an extra percentage of your power, protections and CCR (Crowd Control Reduction). On top of this, whenever you deal ability damage you are healed. This is great to help your sustain in the solo lane. Despite this being an amazing ability, you max it third.

3 - Combat Dodge
This ability is rather unique, and using it correctly is key to playing Achilles properly. The first section of this ability is a short dash in any direction. After the dash, you can throw your spear, like Athena's passive Reach, but only for one ability. What makes this really unique is that if you hit an enemy god with that spear, you may dash and throw the spear once more. In lansing roles you will typically level this first but you must reliably hit the spear on the enemy god and the wave to get enough damage off to clear the wave, if this is not possible it is better to level Shield of Achilles.

Ultimate - Fatal Strike
This is what really makes Achilles shine. This is a dash ability which deals damage to an enemy hit. Seems boring, no? However, if that target is under 30% health, they will be executed instantly. If you execute an enemy, you may use his ability again up until a maximum of five times, at the cost of taking 10% more damage each time you do this. However, this can be avoided if the enemy uses Aegis Amulet at just the right time. Try to prioritise the highest threat on the enemy team, for example a Scylla who deals ridiculous amounts of damage and can easily destroy an entire team.

Playstyle

Achilles' Playstyle

Due to Achilles playing multiple roles, his playstyle can be complex and understanding it is important to do well with Achilles.

Achilles' General Playstyle
Achilles generally plays on the fronines of any fights, taking and dealing damage in equal measure. You want to be playing a mix of defence and offence to get the most out of Achilles. Because Achilles plays three roles, I have divided this section by role.

Tips

Achilles Tips

This section contains some quick tips you can use to improve with Achilles.

1. Auto-Cancel: Make sure you weave auto-attacks in between your abilities to maximize your damage.

2. You can hold the dash charge of your 3 as long as you want, but not the spear. Keep that in mind.

3. You can burn your ultimate as an escape tool, or for the CC immunity.

4. Remember that you can change stances, don't feel locked into one - if you're getting blown up, consider changing to armoured stances, and if you're massively ahead, consider the opposite.

Conclusion

A Short Conclusion

You've reached the end of my Achilles guide. I hope that you found it useful and my advice will help you see success in the future. Any feedback, comments or advice you have for me would be most appreciated. I thank you deeply for taking the time to read my guide.

Good luck out there,
LordMarisco
