Hera Build

Chronos Pendant Start

Notes Recommended starter for Hera as of 6.1 since the Book of Thoth changes make it less viable for her. Chronos Pendant gives Hera an earlier power spike and also increased CDR, which is crucial since Argus now has a longer cooldown at rank 1.

Hera's Standard

Notes Since Season 6 is still relatively fresh, it isn't set in stone which build is (generally) the best for Hera right now. This is a build that I have been experimenting with recently and it seems to work fine. It's possible that Rod of Tahuti or Soul Gem could end up being replaced with more Penetration.

Items to Consider

Notes With the return of Elixir of Speed and the intention of it being a replacement of Boots/Shoes, this leaves most builds open to the addition of a sixth item. Here are some suggestions of what I think can be added towards the end of the build.

*Note: Argus does not proc item passives or on-hit effects, for example: building items such as Gem of Isolation will NOT make Argus' attacks or AoE damage slow enemies. Build items like Gem of Isolation purely for your own benefit, not for Argus, the Defender

Additional Information

PATCH 6.1 (Febuary 5th, 2019)

Based on my own tests in the PTS, this change doesn't seem to impact Hera all that much in practice. While the change does hurt her since she is so dependent on having Argus, the Defender available for her burst combo, it doesn't completely nullify her as a valid Mid-lane or Solo pick. With the increased cooldown time, Shoes of Focus seem even more viable on Hera as long as you have enough flat Penetration from the rest of your build.

Conclusion

Even though Hera, Queen of The Gods has some serious weaknesses and a dependence on Argus, the Defender she can still be incredibly strong in the right hands. The Queen of Olympus isn't one you should underestimate.

Hello The Guardian Knox,
I do have a couple of comments towards this build as a player who has played a lot of Hera recently.
1. Book of Thoth I have found is more a hinderance due to stacks. Hera bursts just as fine without it and can gain other benefits without even having to stack. For the start, an early boots can help Hera use her 1 to dip and and out. Or a Lost Artifact (Tier 1 Chronos') will help with MP5 and the power.
2. Spear of deso is in the same place as book; it's a good item but not necesary on Hera. Something like Shamans ring boosts Heras movement speed even more and gives her more damage.
3. Book of the dead simply isn't useful enough on Hera. Sure it may help you survive the close range gods but Hera should either have Poly or Argus up to counter that. If you play the abilities right you should never need book to save you. Hera effectively has 3 abilities to help her away. Poly is good CC that also slows, your shield gives you a shiled and boosts movement speed. And Argus is excellent for his knockup, damage, and the slow he has.
4. I read some comments talking about how obsidian shard doesn't work on Argus but flat pen does. This may be true but Argus damage mostly happens when Argus is dropped and when your shield is up. I find that most damage comes from Hera's other abilities NOT Argus.

If I sounded rude in this comment I didn't mean it that way, I appologize.

4. I don't think anybody was disputing that... and I never said obsidian shard isn't an option. It's just flat pen is really effective on Hera since Argus doesen't proc item effects, soul reaver was nerfed etc...

2. Don't think you understand the purpose of spear of deso, no it doesen't give her more damage than shamans. Deso has 15 pen and doesen't need to be stacked.

1. I don't think book is a go to anymore but it's still lategame option for power if you're also building soul reaver and perhaps book of the dead.

Alright, I'll take these into consideration and get around to changing the build if I feel like there's improvement to be made, but I do agree with you about Book of the Dead not being so great on Hera anymore due to the Book of Thoth changes. I've been rather caught up with more important, personal things and Resident Evil 2 that I haven't played much SMITE recently, so I also apologize if the Guide is a little outdated for 6.1/6.2

Kriega1 (143) | February 22, 2019 5:15am
Book of the Dead has the same effectiveness as before, it's only book of thoth has a much weaker early game before you have other mana items from the book tree online. Book of thoth could still be an option and you would likely go book of the dead if you go that route, it's just that you're likely going chronos' rush instead (or bancrofts).

I've played a few matches of Hera on CQ Mid, and while I'm def. not the most mechanically skilled player or the player with the best framerate (rip me), I have found Hera to be quite an enjoyable character and truly fun to play. Your build looks similar to mine, Mid-wise, but I do have 1 inquiry:

Why don't you get Book of the Dead earlier? I've found it to help me exist and escape enemies so much more often if I got it 3rd or 4th item (After Shoes of Focus (I'm a scrub for mana and CDR) and Book of Thoth). Is it for the penetration that Spear of Desolation gives you? Cuz I do get Spear, but I feel like getting that more defense-oriented item earlier to help me transition into the mid-to-late game phase of the game better, also making me more relevant in teamfights.

Anyway, what are your thoughts?

Sorry for the late reply, it was 2:30 am at the time of your comment since I live in a CEST timezone. I feel like you just don't need to rush Book of the Dead, since Hera does indeed have her own shield and you're better off picking up something more important like Soul Reaver as it gives you more mana (which will later add to Book of The Dead's passive) and better burst. It's interchangeable, though. You don't have to save Book of the Dead until the last item slot if you don't want to. Personally, I like to get it a little earlier myself when Vs. Gods with high-burst like Poseidon.

Okay, thank you for sharing your experience and your opinion! I'll try some games tomorrow with your build (if I can get mid lmao) and, if I feel like I could use some feedback, I'll post another comment! xoxo

You don't need it that early on Hera, she already has her shield.

Yeah uhm, I gave my reasons as to why I build it, surely seems like you overlooked them. Also, still waiting on Knox to answer my question directed to him

Kriega1 (143) | January 27, 2019 12:30pm
Also would you mind clarifying what roles the conquest build is for?
2
TheGuardianKnox | January 27, 2019 12:49pm
I kind of assumed that based on the item builds, people would know which role was which, but if it really isn't that clear then I am more than happy to elaborate. Both builds are intended for Conquest.

'Bo- Wait... ARGUS! Do something!' is intended for mid-lane. Also includes a build titled 'Arena Build' because while it can work in Conquest, it's better suited to Arena where items like Book of Thoth are not practical.
'The Queen of Conquest' is intended for solo-lane.

I'll add (Mid) and (Solo) prefixes to each build tab respectively.

I know you think you were smart when writing this, but considering the second build is called "The Queen of Conquest", you can hopefully understand how this was misleading.

Defensive start you don't need those health pots if you're going Guardian's Blessing, just get blessing, health chalice and tier 1 boots.

The Hades build has 10% CDR. Not really ideal. I also don't think Oni Hunter's Garb is the way to go, heck im not even sure about Void Stone, but that item should be fine. Genji's Guard would be a nice option to see here in the second build at least. Also could probably get rid of that Ethereal Staff since the build doesen't have much physical defense.

Some newer players may not understand it as well, which is why the clarification would be nice.

I've only tried her a couple times, and not in Conquest, but god I suck with her.

Anyway, this all looks solid. Good humor, good, knowledgeable tips, and build choices and order seem solid. Also cool you've listened to critique but also kept to your own preferences.

Still going to critique the builds later but I just wanted to mention that Hera benefits less with obsidian shard than other mages because Argus is a pet and does not benefit from the item effect. He does benefit from flat penetration though.
1
TheGuardianKnox | January 27, 2019 6:34am
Alright, I've replaced Obsidian Shard with Mantle of Discord in my top-lane build, but I've decided to let it stay in the 'Vs. Magical Protections' build because while Argus may not benefit from it's passive effect, it does work with the rest of Hera's abilities (though it's my mistake for not doing a bit more research on what does and does not effect Argus, thank you for telling me that Ob-Shard's passive does not work with him or other pets as I did not know that.)
2
Kriega1 (143) | January 27, 2019 10:16am
It's still useful of course, but it means that it's more situational on Hera. You're better off building a flat pen item in it's place.
