Decided to make this guide for Ymir for a number of reasons.
there are a lot of ways to build ymir, maybe more then most gods and personally i think most are rubbish, and i will explain why in this guide.
the basics are come down to,
- being too tanky.
- not making proper use of his amazing cc and zoning.
- wasting his damage potential.
i know everyone shouts "omg we need a tank!" and while it useful to have a tank, in smite specifically i found that trying to build too tanky is a problem, why is it a problem?
simple, when you take ymir, players already expect you to be very tanky, building pure tank means that they will never target you in fight until everyone is dead, its great your alive but you wont deal enough damage to be useful. building a hydrid mage/cc build means your still pretty freaking tanky, can initiate, can offer far more cc and can actually contribute a ton of damage, while your tanky your just enough that the enemy might also attack you, which is great, since your there to absorb damage, not be completely ignored.
This important so take good care to read this. guides are merely a guideline, each battle is different and you need to be able to decide what to use.
to make it easier i have broken the guide into 2 paths. physical and magical.
when the game starts pick up level 1 Boots of Celerity these will later be contributing to your cooldown reduction and ability to initiate and chase, both of these of crucial.
then hold down tab and look at the enemy composition. what do they have? if they have mainly magical your going to build Stone of Gaia if they are physical you will build mystic mark each of these means changing your play a little bit depending on your play style.
again because this is so important - check what damage type, magic or physical is going to be the biggest threat to YOU.
regardless of the choice above you will build level 3 blink as the 3rd item.
these 3 items are your core, yes you only need 2 items and 1 ability to be a unstoppable beast.
almost forgot! Chronos' Pendant important item this, it gives you the highest mp regen in the game and more importantly, this along with Boots of Celerity will max out your cool down reduction, so more of those OP stuns in fights.
what if the enemy has a well balanced selection of gods?
1. figure out which are the most dangerous, if they have a Guan Yu he is magic BUT he isnt a threat because he isnt really going to damage you to that extent with bursts.
2. build another item that gives more protection BUT! make sure it is a hybrid item so you dont lose any damage.
what if im forced to build full tank?
1. uninstall smite and play hello kitty island adventure.
2. work on your map awareness and positioning.
This is where you need to pick what you need for each fight.
Defensive items!
Wall of Absolution
Grants more physical defense, probably 1 of the best in the game hands down. It also offers more magic power as well as mp regen.
Void Stone
All round amazing item, grants great magic power, magic protection AND magic penetration.
Warlock Sash
good item that gives 100 AP and 500HP and 400 Mana.
Ethereal Staff
Item that has a great passive, gives a ton of HP AND converts it into magic power, this can end up giving you a massive amount of extra power.
Offensive Items!
Rod of Tahuti
everyone should know this item by now, it gives some mp regen, really high magic power and its passive gives 25% of your AP as more power. pick this up when you have a good amount of AP and want to just tip the scale, also only grab it if your doing well, if your not able to stay alive, grab a defensive item.
Polynomicon
This little item aside from the sustain it gives from lifestealing (magic lifesteal is worthless) it gives 75 magic power and we want it for the passive, it deals bonus damage after casting a skill as physical damage onto your auto attack, so freeze them, spike them and gently tenderize them with your club. (if the enemy have high physical defense then dont pick this up).
Book of Thoth
tons of magic power and converts a % of your max mana into more power, generally you grab this then Rod of Tahuti for maximum damage.
Bancroft's Talon
We do not give a damn about the lifesteal on this! what we want is the enemy to beat us down so we can keep getting more magic power, and since you have high hp its a great pick up.
Obsidian Shard
If they build tanky, pen, its a good thing.
Breastplate of Valor
My number one, im a complete noob item on him. and i see too many people pick it up. so why is it so bad? well in terms of physical protection there are better items,in terms of mana, there are better items, oh but it has cooldown reduction! yay! no...just no. while it has CD is makes you more tanky, which we dont want AND WORST of all, it does not sustain your damage! at all! this item is replaced with Chrono's Pendant because it gives MP regen which we need, 50 magic power which keeps us hitting like a truck and it gives the 25% cd reduction.
Overall there is no good reason to pick this up on Ymir. ever.
Reinforced Boots
CD reduction is more important and so is the speed needed to keep up with enemies and disrupt them. so we get Boots of Celerity these concrete boots slow you down, and you do not need more regen or life because passively your a **** ***** to kill anyway. getting these boots also means that with 1 cd items your at 25/35% and getting another items would put you at 50/35% so your way over the limit and its just a waste.
Magi's Blessing
lackluster magic defense compared to just about every magic defense item in the game, and that passive will pop on 1 tick of anything, in fact im sure you can pop it just by angrily looking at someone, so overall dont bother.
Hide of the Nemean Lion
i dont pick this up because your not really focused on in team fights, only instance to grab this is if a Ne Zha keeps ganking you, that situation aside you never need it, grabbing Mystic Mark will give more constant damage and help you farm.
Mark of the Vanguard
I dont fear creaps, *** them your a frost giant, waste of 750 gold, man up or go home!
This needs a Section by itself because it is the absolute core for Ymir, if you pick this up or dont think you need it, please stop playing ymir, If you do see its value and use this guide, please dont use it in game with me, i like winning and this will make it an absolute **** to deal with, i might even archive my guide.
Now onto the annoying f*** rage that is generated with this item.
whats worse then a frost giant running at you to stun you?
well that would be the frost giant that teleported behind you and froze you before you could even blink. or it could be the frost giant who just blinked through a concrete wall and shoved an icicle up you ***** without warning, its fairly rude but it works.
and in public games most people do not know how to even begin to counter.
Role Changing? 0_0
oh shiii what? yeah congratulations you are no longer a boring tank, your now a high damage ganker who also serves as a tank.
ok lets look at situations. there are countless so here is a few.
dual laning with your partner Bob who hopefully deals at least half your damage.
Bob wants to initiate because he has decent burst. so the enemy think they have you cornered at your tower! 0_0 amazes me how many times i pull the lane and the enemy get cocky, so all you do is blink behind them and Frost Breath followed up by your Glacial Strike, if your lane partner has a stun or slow, go into your Shards of Ice they wont escape, alternatively use the ability Creeping Curse
you leave your lane cause mid lane is getting pushed, stand behind a heavy wall, enemies expect to be ganked from the lanes, they do not expect people to magically materialize through a wall behind them, follow the same combo as above.
We all know the mid lane stand still phase where you all stare at each other while the enemy is under their tower, well you go for a walk into the right jungle, the concrete wall next to mid tower, ya just blink through it, same combo and your team follows up, mass killing incoming. the face of the neith i did this too had me dying of laughter, she couldnt even pull off a leap in time.
Keep in mind, the timer for blink, if you auto attack it goes on CD. Try and find awkward places to blink from as the enemy dont expect it, uncertainty is a **** to deal with.
More coming, but if there is anything specific you want to know or would like me to add please let me know in the comments below.
