Core Items

Notes Although any melee god can appreciate attack speed, Pele is an ability-focused god with good scaling and will appreciate higher power where possible.

Warrior Tabi is the preferred Boots option, though Talaria Boots is a potential alternative if you want increased MS.

If you get to the late-game, Heartseeker is an extremely helpful pickup against both squishies (due to the flat pen) and tanks (due to the passive).

Full Build Example (Full Damage)

Notes This build provides a high and consistent power curve throughout to provide Pele with items supporting an aggressive, offensive playstyle. Provides good flat pen, CDR, health sustain, chase and bonus damage potential, and Titan’s Bane to help damage the tankiest enemies late-game.

Soul Eater is a strong mid-game option to allow Pele to stay out longer and last longer in a fight due to the basic attack and ability lifesteal it provides.

Replace Warrior Tabi late-game with Elixir of Speed and an additional item of your choice.

Full Build Example (Anti-Heal / Bruiser)

Notes This is a build that provides some utility and protections for survivability in a fight. Since Pele needs to be in close to deal most of her damage, the protections are extremely helpful.

Brawler’s Beat Stick, the mace-tree option shown in this build, is purchased specifically for the anti-heal; it can be replaced with The Crusher or Jotunn’s Wrath as preferred.

Void Shield is situational but helpful, though you can also consider other items like Shifter’s Shield.

Mantle of Discord is shown as a 6th item, but is also situational. It’s quite helpful when you need to get in close to enemies and still survive.

Replace Tabi late with Elixir of Speed and another item of your choice.

Pele flourishes and fires out a magma orb ahead of her in a line, dealing damage and granting fuel per enemy hit. Once the fiery projectile reaches maximum distance it hovers for a brief instant, solidifies, and then returns back in pieces, dealing damage to enemies on the way back. The number of shards returning is dependent on the rank of this ability.

Pele has 2 charges of this ability.

Abilities

Everlasting Flame
  • Pele's passive benefits her offensive nature when she’s in a fight, as she receives a temporary boost in power and lifesteal once her health drops below 50%. This boost can turn an even matchup into a significant advantage for her. Don’t be afraid to stick in a fight if the situation isn’t clearly disadvantageous.

  • If your health is a bit above 50% during the earlier laning phase, you can activate her passive using damage from nearby minions to heal yourself with the lifesteal boost. This allows you to stay out in the field for an extended time if you’re not ready to purchase your next item yet.

Pyroclast
  • Since this ability shoots in a straight line, it’s strongly suggested to put this on Instant Cast.

  • Use this when the enemy is under crowd control or is retreating in a straight line to more easily confirm both the initial hit and the returning shards. Combo this with Eruption for its knockup effect, which can help you more easily confirm the full damage.

  • The shot out is in a straight line from where it was directed, but the return shards follow a path based on where Pele is currently located. Move to keep the enemy between you and the orb to see its full damage potential.

Eruption
  • This ability has a delay of around 1 second after cast, meaning it's best to plan ahead when using it for the knock-up. To help with the delay, and because the AOE is always centered around Pele’s initial cast point, it’s strongly suggested to put this on Instant Cast as well.

  • This ability can be easily confirmed on enemies that have no mobility abilities, especially when cast very close to the enemy. Have Magma Rush activated to stay close to the enemy.

  • With the delay on the cast, this ability can be anticipated and avoided by enemies with mobility abilities. It is usually not suggested to initiate a fight with this unless you know the enemy has just used their escape ability.

Magma Rush
  • This ability is used for melee-range damage, chase, and escape.

  • Only use the base activation when using this for movement speed, unless you need a short burst of speed to catch a retreating enemy or escape a deadly situation. The extra movement speed in the amplified state sees diminished movement speed returns, and what seems to be double the movement speed boost isn’t nearly that, and it’s not worth the extra fuel expenditure.

  • When fighting, almost always use the amplified state unless you don’t have local area vision and might need to disengage and retreat. As you gain increased levels in the ability, the damage increase (especially in 4x scaling of the base) is absolutely worth double the fuel cost.

  • Activate this ability when Everlasting Flame procs, to constantly heal from enemies due to the ability lifesteal effect.

Volcanic Lightning
  • Although the range is great for chase function, it’s typically best to use this at the start or middle of a fight. You’ll benefit from the slow when using follow-up abilities. It’s also helpful in tight teamfights due to the cone damage.

  • To more easily confirm the hit, use this immediately after Eruption’s knock-up.

  • In a worst-case scenario, this can be used as a dash for an emergency escape. More importantly, while you’re channeling and dashing, you are immune to crowd control, meaning it can double as a form of Purification Beads. Keep this in mind when facing particularly threatening situations!

Leveling Priority

4 1 3 2

Volcanic Lightning should typically be leveled when available, as the damage increase is substantial, and helps her quickly get the better of a fight and end it as soon as possible.

With 2 projectile shots in a fully charged Pyroclast, it provides the highest potential for damage.

Magma Rush has surprisingly high sustained damage potential and has great scaling with power. Although it might make sense to prioritize Eruption before this due to the increasing radius, it has the least damage potential and the radius is only more helpful late-game in team fights. You can choose between the two depending on preference, but typically players tend to prefer leveling Eruption before Magma Rush.

Item Options

Situational Items (Offense)

Power, flat penetration, and high cooldown reduction enable Pele to be consistently aggressive with lots of poke potential.

Although it doesn’t proc on Magma Rush, she’ll get good use of the passive from her first two abilities and her ultimate, and the power and flat pen are always helpful.

Good power and flat penetration combine with anti-heal function to counter heal-heavy enemies.

Strong late-game choice plus penetration helps your damage get through against durable targets.

Use basic attack canceling in between ability use to get the most damage out of this item. The cooldown reduction and MP5 bonuses are also beneficial!

Soul Eater is perhaps not fully a core item, but many have found very good use out of it. The high power, CDR, and lifesteal from both basics and abilities is a great fit for her. Extremely useful especially when building full damage and no protections.

A lot of power, cooldown reduction and more burst. You also gain a giant amount of movement speed when using your ultimate, making it almost impossible for the enemy to escape alive. In a team fight, you may want to use your ultimate closer to when your initial target is close to dying. After finishing off your first target, the movement speed boost will allow you to quickly transfer to the next target.

It’s an option if you skipped Soul Eater and want the power and shield for the later stages of the game.

Situational Items (Defense / Bruiser / Utility)

Universal late-game protections for squishy gods, this can be particularly helpful for gods like Pele who want to get in close to do their damage.

Emergency item to purchase when having trouble with lots of enemy crowd control abilities that greatly outpaces your Purification Beads.

Bruiser item focusing more on physical protections and providing high power when healthy to help with ganking.

Useful in the mid to late-game against physical enemies. It’s nice to get a bit of offense even when building defensive items. Additionally helpful for other physical teammates ganging up on the same enemy.

This is an early-game option to counter a magical-heavy team, especially those with a magical jungler. It can be considered for replacement late-game.

Functional protection item against troublesome magical enemies, also provides some physical power to help with Pele’s scaling abilities and can interrupt channeled abilities.

Helpful for the high health bonus and cooldown reduction, the passive also provides MP5 at low mana so you never truly run out.

This is an emergency pick against multiple enemies building crit items. It is a full protection item with a very specific purpose, so only purchase if absolutely necessary to your survival.

Relic Choices

Recommended starting relic to help initiation, since Pele doesn’t have a quick closing ability outside of her ultimate.
First or second relic option when facing a high threat of crowd control.
Best as a second relic when facing high burst damage potential from enemies that are predictable. It can also counter execute ultimate abilities.

Starting Items & Build Examples

Starting Items

Should always be picked up by all Junglers.

Pele uses the mace tree extremely well, and the early power from this item will help with jungle clear speed.

Use this on the back XP camp to speed your clear and improve your rotation speed.

Pele is not particularly mana-hungry, especially early game. She does need the health.

Full Build Example (Full Damage)

This build provides a high and consistent power curve throughout to provide Pele with items supporting an aggressive, offensive play style. Provides good flat penetration, cooldown reduction, health sustain, chase and bonus damage potential, and Titan’s Bane to help damage the tankiest enemies late-game.

Replace Warrior Tabi late-game with Elixir of Speed and an additional item of your choice. Shown here is Mantle of Discord, which provides more cooldown reduction and balanced protections to help you absorb some damage when enemies have complete builds.

Full Build Example (Anti-Heal / Bruiser)

This is a build that provides some utility and protections for survivability in a fight. Since Pele needs to be in close to deal most of her damage, the protections are extremely helpful.

Brawler's Beat Stick, shown in this build, is helpful for anti-heal against high-healing comps, but can be replaced with The Crusher or Jotunn's Wrath as preferred.

Void Shield is situational but helpful, though you can also consider other items like Shifter's Shield.

Mantle of Discord is shown as a 6th item, but is also situational. It’s quite helpful when you need to get in close to enemies and still survive.

Replace Warrior Tabi late with Elixir of Speed and another item of your choice.

Gameplay

Early Game

Main facts to keep in mind:

  • Pele has strong early-game potential compared to many other junglers, due to her built-in passive lifesteal and 4 damaging abilities. Look to pressure enemies early to put them on their heels and give you more room to operate and roam the jungle.

  • Quickest camp clear will be to alternate use of Pyroclast and Magma Rush. In case you want abilities to be available in a pinch, feel free to use Pyroclast whenever you have both stacks. This will shorten the time Magma needs to be used, keeping its stacks higher as well.

  • Once you get your ult at level 5, start ganks by using Blink Rune into Eruption when possible, followed by basics. Hold your Volcanic Lightning and Magma Rush if the enemy tries to escape.

  • Prioritize farming for the first few levels until you get your ultimate. Only go for a full gank when the opportunity is clear; otherwise, you can start initiating after you have boots and your first pen item (either The Crusher or Brawler's Beat Stick).

Mid Game

Main facts to keep in mind:
  • Potentially Pele’s strongest stage of the game. Like Thanatos, she has the ultimate jungler kit: an ability that deals a lot of damage, crowd control, a chasing ability and a powerful ultimate with crowd control immunity.

  • Unless you're behind, you need to use this time to generate as much pressure and kills as possible.

Late Game

Main facts to keep in mind:
  • Do your best to quickly eliminate the enemy backline. Avoid focusing on the tanks!

  • Do not fight alone! If you attempt a 1 vs 1 in late game you might end up in an outmatched situation, since most players are grouping up, or generally close to other teammates. Play smart and group up with your team as well, watch for enemy ability usage, and time your dives accordingly!

Only going to list item builds as 6 items...dropped Mantle from the build example as 7th item.

So firstly, we published then put on archive to continue working on this before publishing fully.

That said, some notes haven't been added yet. My own writeup on Soul Eater in our draft is as follows:

" Soul Eater is perhaps not fully a core item, but many have found very good use out of it. The high power, CDR, and lifesteal from both basics and abilities is a great fit for her. Extremely useful especially when building full damage and no protections."

That will make its way into the guide.

So in that it's not true core, I agree...but I also think it's a very solid item, not just "okay," especially for players looking to get into playing her. Keep in mind, pros and high level players don't need this guide. Adding health sustain via lifesteal is going to be helpful for players to keep their health up, and the fact that she's ability-based means this item will work well for her.

Yes, if you bypass SE and continue with the mace tree for the 3rd item, for example, you'll get more early pen or CDR or other damage potential...or if going for things like Void Shield or Runic Shield early, you'll be able to take a lot more early punishment...but this is by no means a poor/mediocre item for her.

That said, based on feedback, we will always consider dropping the item from the current core listing. I would 100% suggest showing it in an example build, however.

God, I hate the fact that Spectral is a thing right now. It really should only be for tanks. That item drives me crazy. Thanks though for the HoG suggestion. I can add it as an option, or at least a mention.

FYI Inters3ct's jungle guide that just came out shows Soul Eater as the 3rd item in his example build for her.

Looking for feedback on what people consider as "core" items for Pele...keep in mind, that doesn't mean you build it every single game, but that it's at least very difficult to pass up.

I would say Warrior Tabi is core...especially in the upcoming patch as Talaria will see the MS nerf. Other items in consideration are Soul Eater, Heartseeker, Arondight. Reason I don't list The Crusher is because although it's also very popular for her, it seems a bit interchangeable with the other mace items. I'd say you often pick it and another mace item up, but it doesn't always have to be that way.
