Introduction

Artemis hurts, there is no contesting that. But when she has so much CC, an ult that gives you 1.5 seconds of CC immunity, and a tendency to bring herself closer to an enemy. So, why not build her a bit tanky? Call me crazy... well, you're right. This is another one of my stupid, marginally acceptable builds for a hero staple of mine. I don't play Artemis too much, so take this build however you will. When I do play Artemis, since I don't have a hard escape, I always want more survivability. So, why not build that? This is my 3rd iteration of that attempt, and I finally think it's in a pretty good place. As always, let me know what you think. Thank you.

A note about transcendence

Transcendence is the most bang-for-the-buck 3rd tier item in the game. That's my belief. Bringing Artemis into jungle practice, even when I don't build much mana, I gain around 100 physical power from transcendence. And 10% CDR. And a near-eternal amount of mana sustain. From one item! It is an expensive item, but how can that value not justify shelling out the money for it? That being said, expect me to build it on all my hunters - unless it gets nerfed, or I'm doing an uber-wonky-zany-wacky-****ty build.

Pros / Cons

Pros

  • Many a duel to be had, and won
  • Tasteful mana sustain
  • Very large amounts of damage - consistent, but large nonetheless
  • Surprisingly robust penetration, though it's not exceptionally notable

Cons
  • (Depending on 6th item) no health sustain
  • Good in a bit of everything, but not stellar in any one thing. This becomes an issue when you're up against an especially odd comp. But that is what a sharp brain is for.

Bran, can this be considered for archive? This was published in November.

With this being clarified as not for duel mode, I will agree that these are really poor builds...it's really, really not optimal. Only reason I don't consider troll is because owner seems to be putting in effort.

Owner, I know you've got specific intent with this build, but it's just not one I'd suggest to anyone, no offense. If you're looking to take advantage of her passive's relationship to CC, then your best bet is to go a traditional crit route that includes Poisoned Star. If you want some survivability in that, then consider Magi's Cloak as an option.

Even if it was for duel the builds are still awful.

Alright. Waited 2 weeks for this to be fixed. You want to get creative with off meta builds? Here you go:

Warrior tabi
Transcendence
Atalanta's bow
The executioner
Qin's sais
Bloodforge

Warrior tabi
Devourer's gauntlet
Rage
The executioner
Deathbringer
Qin's sais

Overall, it is an extremely bad idea to not get boots on a god with no escape.

Since you have to buy other attack speed items like the executioner, Atalanta's bow and toxic blade will be getting you really close to overcapping attack speed (especially after using your 2nd skill).

I am downvoting your guide until it is fixed. For reference on how to build artemis in the meta, see this guide:

The items you are recommending are not hunter items and will hurt your dps significantly.

Gulfwulf (81) | November 17, 2018 2:17pm
You should think about Silverbranch Bow since you're overcapping attack speed anyway.

This is my fault entirely, but I should have mentioned earlier on that this build is for Arena, clash, and Joust, the game modes that I play most. I never play duel. The title of this build was referencing her dueling in those game mode. I didn't make that clear, and that's my fault. Sorry about that.

That is even worse then. You have no dps items in your build. Frostbound is not good on hunters because the effects are reduced for ranged attacks. Runeforged is not a hunter item. At the bare minimum, get boots in your build and replace one of your hammers with qins sais. Toxic blade is situational. Replace it with bloodforge.

Choices definitely look a bit funky, especially splitting movement between Atalanta's Bow and Toxic Blade. Going defense (or even double defense) is a pretty common tactic in duel. I see no mention of any defense for this build (vs. magical or physical opponents).

Some top tier duelists (NShadow, Sexi Rexsi, SamDaDude) seem to prefer Devourer's Gauntlet to Transcendence as the stacking item (this makes sense to me).

So overall, my only questionable picks are Transcendence, Atalanta's Bow, Toxic Blade, Bloodforge, and no mention of defense (which is usually purchased earlier in the build).

Here are videos of the duelists I was mentioning earlier:

IDK who this is, but the video (although not being english) was still interesting

One of the videos is a bit old, going back far enough to when Artemis had crit in her passive. Also, SamDaDude built Frostbound Hammer in one of these videos against Thoth.

I'm actually not sure this is a troll build...at least, it's not a pure troll build, but rather a build with some thought in it. It's definitely non-conventional, and I honestly have no clue how it would work. But I think I get some of the concept, though I also have some other thoughts on some of the choices.
  • Alright, base of the build is Transcendence. This isn't a bad item due to the high power, and the CDR is nice, but I DO question the need for that much mana. In all honesty, how much would you run out of mana? I would think you should be able to manage well enough with a couple of mana potions...or at most, a likely well-invested Chalice of Mana to tide you over through the match.

And if you don't in fact need all that mana (which again, I'm not sure, cuz you're only fighting one person, so when you go all-in, it's unlikely to be something you will do often), then part of the item's stats are a bit wasted. In a duel situation, you probably want your build to be as efficient as possible.

  • MS isn't needed as much in this mode. I can get behind looking for a way not to have to get Tabi. Splitting MS between Atalanta's Bow and Toxic Blade is a unique way to do this...though I'd probably say it's situational when you'd pick up Toxic Blade to begin. Sustain is an important thing in this mode in some ways, so the likelihood of facing an enemy with either lifesteal or healing is probably pretty high...you don't want to get poked a couple of times and automatically have to back. That's a way to lose lane quickly.

  • Speaking of sustain, for those exchanges or danger in enemy poke (like what if you're facing Thoth?), this is where the need for Trans comes into more question, and I wonder if Devourer's Gauntlet is perhaps the better choice, just so you have a better measure of health sustain. Even if you decide to get a buff camp, if you don't have any sustain (other than potions) your health is going to be ticking down.

But maybe you don't mind educating me on what it actually is like, and how much sustain would actually help. Would be interested to hear your feedback.

  • Runeforged Hammer seems like another item that's questionable, but I get it. When you really go all-in, you're likely to have the enemy under CC for a decent amount of the time. Root, 2 second slow, stun. The health also gives you a measure of extra survivability.

  • As for the 6th item, these mostly all make some sense. Frost has more health (makes up a bit if you don't get lifesteal), and its CC means Rune will always apply.

Shifter's is a solid item overall, especially for the high power...but part of this item's defense is going to be wasted.

BF is a good item overall, but if you're only facing one enemy...you probably don't need that shield if you kill them. If you're going to want that lifesteal, this is again pointing me toward getting Devo's over Trans.

If you're getting Toxic Blade, I'm thinking Brawler's Beat Stick is overkill. The other stats are great, but you might be better served considering other items.
As a summary, yeah, I get your concept here. You're getting a lot of utility out of your choices.

That said, I think more of a focus in counter-building would probably help, as you don't really have any of those options. Your 6th item options, while maybe okay, leave a lot to be desired.

And of course, I would expect the common build option for Art in a duel situation would be crit with Poisoned Star being a key item for the damage reduction. Would appreciate some response here.

Never really played Artemis so I can't give any advice but reading the response you gave had me thinking of some build ideas to maybe try. A build I was thinking of was Devourer's Gauntlet Warrior Tabi Runeforged Hammer Frostbound Hammer and The Executioner Qin's Sais or two crit items like Poisoned Star Deathbringer. The idea intrigued me because the combo of both hammers with her passive sounds like it could be decent but I don't know if the build I just gave is troll material/not worth trying or not.

EDIT: Also the build isn't in any particular order.

Branmuffin17 (400) | October 31, 2018 1:32pm
I'd say that Qin's is a great item overall, but has more effect against tanky enemies. It could be a decent pickup if the enemy is an inherently tanky god, and also is building a lot of health. Otherwise, I'd probably not get it, at least not for Art. Burst damage via crits, combined with her steroid, generally makes the most sense. And I mean, this is the perfect setting for Poisoned Star, TBH.

The double-hammer concept is interesting, but those are 2 slots that could be used by other things...depends what else you would build, but even though they have power, they don't have any pen (flat pen is probably better).

Exe is fine as a base pen item, as it will provide the equivalent of 21 pen against a level 20 enemy that builds 0 protection, though in duel, I'd expect at least 1 counter item containing protection. Add some further flat pen to that, and you're starting to get closer to true damage.

Troll build. Please archive.
1
ownerbynight | October 31, 2018 12:32pm
And why would that be? Do you think that is my intent with this build? Please let me know what is so trollish about this build.
1
Gulfwulf (81) | October 31, 2018 2:03pm
I wouldn't say this build is trollish, but it is unoptimal. It requires Art to get to late game, which is already difficult for her since she's so easily destroyed early game. I would start with Attacker's Blessing, Spiked Gauntlet, health and mana potions x3. I would then build Ninja Tabi and finish off Devourer's Gauntlet. After that I would buy a defensive item that directly counters my opponent ( Breastplate of Valor/ Hide of the Nemean Lion for physical or Genji's Guard/ Pestilence for magical). I would then get executioner or Titan's Bane then decide whether or not I want to go into crit or Qin's Sais. If I needed anti-heal, I'd probably go with BBS instead of toxic blade because of Art's steroid.

The problem with your build is that Shifter's Shield is basically useless because you only need protections from your opponent, not the rest of the team as you would in conquest. Also, shifter's isn't a good item on her.

Art isn't a very high-tiered goddess in duel and your build is just asking to be blown up by someone who knows how to counter build her and can be aggressive early. Also, you should prioritize Vengeful Assault over Transgressor's Fate.
